3: .J | John Steinbeck was born in Salinas,California in 1902. He attended Stanford University in 1919. He was enrolled in Literature and writing courses. He left without a degree in 1925. During the next five years, he was a laborer and journalist in New York City. He has written numerous books on various topics. He died in 1968, after winning a Nobel Prize in 1962.
5: Kino and the doctor lived very different lifestyles. The doctor lived in a nice house such as the one in the picture on top, while Kino lived in a hut on the beach such as the picture on the bottom. The doctor was wealthy and has most of the things he wanted. Kino was indigent and had to work just to provide food for his family.
7: Juana is Kino's wife and Coyotitio's mother. She is a courageous mother but a submissive wife. | Kino is the main character in the book. He is overtaken by the pearl and becomes lost in his dreams of wealth and a better life for his family. | Coyotito is the baby of the family. He is the catalyst of the story. He gets stung by a scorpion causing his family to need the pearl more than ever. He gets shot and dies at the end of the book. | The beggars sit outside of the church and beg. They are also very judicious and judge people's sin as they come out of the church.
8: Chapter 1 Kino woke up to a typical morning. His wife was by his side, and his son was lying in bed. Then, something terrible happened. Kino's son has been stung by a scorpion! Juana, Kino's wife, immediately starts to suck the poison out. Then, Kino and his family go to the doctor, but the doctor refuses to help him because he doesn't have enough money. Kino is furious and ashamed.
9: Chapter 2 In this chapter, Kino finds a pearl. It's the biggest pearl anyone has ever seen. The baby also seems to have gotten better right after the finding of the pearl.
10: Chapter 3 After finding the pearl, Kino is a legend. Everyone is talking about "the pearl of the world". Kino starts thinking about all the things he will do with the money. The doctor comes to see them. He gives the baby some white powder that he says will help him but is actually making him sick. Kino gets attacked for the first time. Someone is trying to steal his pearl!
11: Chapter 4 Kino goes to the pearl buyers. They all tell him the same thing. They say that his pearl isn't worth much because it's too big. Kino is furious and says he will go to the capital where he will get the money he deserves. Kino is attacked again. His attacker is still unknown.
12: Chapter 5 Kino wakes up to discover that Juana has stolen the pearl and is attempting to throw it back into the sea. Kino hits and kicks her. He was attacked shortly after that, and this time he killed a man. Someone sets his house on fire. Kino's and his family stay at Kino's brother's house until the next day. The next day, Kino and his family are to run away to the capital.
13: Chapter 6 This chapter is about Kino and his family's journey to the capital. They travel on foot while trying to avoid the trackers looking for them. In an attempt to eliminate the trackers, Kino tries to steal their weapons and kill them, but he fails. Thinking that Coyotito is a coyote, the trackers shoot him. The baby dies, and at the end of the story, Kino throws the pearl back in to the sea.
14: The theme of this story is that wealth does not make you happy. In this story, Kino stumbles upon a marvelous pearl. This is great right? Wrong! The pearl becomes the reason that Kino loses everything. He loses his home,dignity, and even his beloved son. Kino thought that the pearl would bring him wealth and happiness when in actuality, it brought nothing but bad luck and sorrow.
