BC: The meeting still went on after the controversy of the U-2 Incident. Eisenhower and Khrushcev agreed to have it. It was a disaster. The summit talks collapsed and the thaw of the Cold War was over.
FC: U-2 INCIDENT
1: In 1959, Vice president Richard Nixon visited the Soviet Union. Nikita Krushchev then came to the U.S. He charmed the media by touring Iowa farms and Hollywood. Eisenhower agreed to discuss an arms reduction at a summit in Paris the following year.
2: May 5, 1960 On this day Nikita Khrushvev announced that the Soviets had shot down a U.S. spy plane. The U.S. officials denied the charge. Later he announced that the pilot had survived the incident.
3: Francis Gary Powers Francis was sent on a secret mission in the U-2 Plane. Eisenhower was the one who approved of this mission flight. The shooting down of the plane became known as the U-2 Incident.

5: In January of 1958 the United States launched its first satellite. Later on the U.S. decided to make the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to research space. This helped begin special programs to improve math, science, and foreign languages in order get the country win the arms and space races.
