Introduction What are tsunamis? How do we know when there is a tsunami? What causes a tsunami? These questions are asked all over the world.

Tsunamis are a group of waves that move across the ocean, one after another, often caused by earthquakes on the ocean floor. Tsunami waves can go as fast as 600 miles per hour, as fast as a jet plane! Tsunamis can get over a hundred feet tall, and look like a wall of water moving forward. In 1968, the tallest tsunami ever recorded stood 1700 feet tall, and hit Lituya Bay, Alaska. | Lituya Bay: Before | Lituya Bay: After | What Causes a Tsunami?

. | Another sign that a tsunami is coming is when the water is bubbling up, and rising. When an earthquake happens, the PTWC sends out a watch in areas where tsunamis could occur. | In 1907, a 10 year old British girl, who was visiting Thailand, saved lives by recognizing the tsunami warning signs. She and her parents helped to evacuate the beach. | In 1965, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) was formed in 1965 to prepare people for tsunamis. A good warning sign that a tsunami is coming is if the water moves away from the shore. | What are Tsunami warning signs?

Animals can predict tsunamis. Water buffalo may have saved lives following the 2004 Indonesian Sumatra earthquake when they led villagers in Bang Koey, Thailand, to higher land levels before the arrival of a tsunami caused by an earthquake. | Animals and Tsunamis

On December 26, 2004, off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, two plates tore apart, causing an underwater earthquake. This resulted in a tsunami that reached over 98 feet high. The tsunami killed 230,000 people in fourteen different countries. This tsunami was the most devastating earthquake-related event in history.

On March 11, 2011, a tsunami disaster hit Japan at 2:46 pm, 80 miles east of the Pacific along the fault buried under the sea floor. Over 15,000 people died and many cities were destroyed. Some Japanese people were washed out into the ocean., and many are still missing. The waves pushed cars around like toy cars. Chemicals from the tsunami were washed into the ocean. and trash has been washing ashore as far away as California and Hawaii. Justin Bieber raised money for the victims of Japan by singing.

An earthquake hit Mindoro Island in the Philippines on November 15, 1994. Three minutes later, an aftershock happened, a giant wave almost 20 feet high hit 25 miles of the northern coast and eastern shores of Mindoro. It then surged on to the state of Baco.

In Baco, the tsunami smashed into the shore and drowned forty-one people. Reports were heard of a sound that sounded like the loud gush of a strong rain as the wave hit the coast. Then the tsunami moved on to Calapan, the Philippine capital.
