FC: You Wouldn't want to Sail with Ferdinand Magellan | By Zach #1

His eyes shined with a lot of gold for sailing on a big ship made of the best kind of wood in the country. Ferdinand Magellan, a brave sea captain, explored the seas near and far. He was inspired by Columbus and went on sea journeys exactly like him. Magellan was born in Oporto, Portugal in about 1480 and died in 1521. He sailed through a straight (Now called the straight of Magellan) that was so terrible that the crew thought of starting a mutiny to turn around. The seas were harsh for all those people back then since they didn’t know how to balance a ship like we do now. So, sit back and let your mind go to the 1500’s. | Introduction | Handy Hint Don’t drink the salt water. It will either make you sick or make you very very thirsty.

Land Ho! We are going to a straight that is thought to lead through the New World. We will go to the New World to trade with the Indians for food and fresh water for our journey. Then, we will go through a water way that is thought to be a straight that leads through the New World to the Pacific Ocean. After we are through the water way we will sail past Australia to the New World, then we will sail back to Spain. It’s a long trip, but we’ll hopefully live to tell the story of it. | Where are we Going?

Please, Please give us money and supplies for our voyage. We will pay for the voyage by asking the queen and king of Spain for money, if they say “no,” we’ll just keep asking until they say “yes.” We will get supplies from the queen and king, but when we get back we’ll need to pay them back with the stuff we traded. If they send us away forever we will ask the queen and king of England for money instead. These are some of the ways we paid for our voyage. | How will we Pay for the Voyage? | Handy Hint If you ask the queen and king for money, supplies, and a ship, you will have to pay them back after the voyage with what you traded.

We are taking over this ship now. It is time for everyone on this ship to decide to mutiny or not. I don’t know if they will mutiny. They might mutiny because we are running low on food. The crew might mutiny because we might get into rough waters. They might mutiny because they think that we don’t have good enough food. There are lots of reasons to mutiny and these are just a few. | Will my Crew Mutiny? | Handy Hint If you go on the voyage be ready for anything like having bread with worms in it and bread that stinks like rat pee.

The tall dark blue water might be in Ferdinand's path, but he will blow right through it. Ferdinand Magellan was a crazy man. He wanted to go through a straight that had tall cliffs. He sailed through the straight, but it took a month. He lost a ship in it, too. When he returned to Spain, he was the first person ever to circumnavigate the globe. What a crazy man that had a big achievement. | Conclusion
