17: The Stone Elephant is a glacial erratic found off a rather rough section of the Ice Age Trail. It reminded me a bit of those sections so frequently mentioned in Mallory’s journal. The bit here winds up and down glacial ridges through shaded groves and small patches of prairie. We had traversed it in my first expedition with the Rockin’ K Training Group, despite deep snow and bitter cold. Not too far from Bald Bluff Base Camp is a ridge-top overlook. It was here that I made a desperate departure from the group during Expedition 2. In my defense, I have always trained to do without. Slog it out, stiff upper lip. If one can make one’s way under those conditions, then one will be prepared when things go awry. You see, my first expedition with the “Rockin’ K training group” departed from the very same Bald Bluff Base Camp. It appeared to me a well organized endeavor, however, there was an odd contingent and repeated pleas from the them to “suck off my tube.” “Oh, no! Please! Suck off my tube, others would entreat.” I knew then that something was amiss and, given ample snow and forest products, relied largely on locally available provisions. But during my second expedition (and I’m not proud to say this) I did in fact, suck off the tube of a Sherpa of sorts named Stiffy. This was to be my undoing. I very soon began to feel as if I was being followed! I picked up my pace and tried to put some distance between myself and whatever was crashing so wildly through the terrain behind me. I was nearly back to base camp when I thought it best to duck off and reconnoiter. I had managed quite a safe distance when whatever was in the “tube” kicked in. The entire left side of my body went numb. Entirely useless. Fortunately, having studied Shackleton, I remembered that one could use one’s own body to leverage itself and move forward. With the mantra; step, drag, lean, breathe; step, drag, lean, breathe, I managed to make my way back to base camp forcing the useless part of my body forward through sheer force of will. Once back, I was able to contact the rest of the party and warn them of Stiffy’s contaminated provision. The search party was called off and we made our way home. Written By: Jeff Danielstcf himself
