1: To my dearest soul mate, Happy 40th today! Every day I spend with you is like a gift, and I am so thankful to God for bringing you into my life. Thankyou for all your love, support and patience with me. Life is a great journey, and I’m so excited at the thought of continuing to walk and run with you and our loving Father over the next 40 years and beyond! You are a gift to me, and to our children, so celebrate 40years today! 2: "Sarah was a very chatty little girl. When she went to school the house was so quiet and I missed her bright chatter. At Little Athletics, Sarah (6) broke some records, and when one of the mothers asked her how she did it, she said "Oh you just have to run fast!" One of the records still stands.

Although there are many many kilometres between us, I hope that you will feel the birthday love all the way from Australia. So much has happened, some good, some bad. Life is amazing, the world around me continues to surprise, annoy and intrigue me. What will happen in the future? All I know is that the times I hold closest to my heart are times when friendships have been founded that I know will last a long time. We saw a movie a few weeks ago called "Red Dog". It was all about the Red Dog legend of Dampier. How the memories flooded back. What a great time we had. 17: I love the way you confidently embrace life. You seem to soak it up and experience it at a level that most people miss. You don't just drift along, but rather become engaged and involved. As a mother with 4 children, and the business which ensues, you have the mental agility to feel and to focus on the immediate, while thinking about those around you. You constantly amaze me at your ability to love and care for so many people and God had blessed you richly with this gift. I love that you do things well and that you push yourself to achieve your goals. Your comment that 'you do not like to be in your comfort zone' challenged me in my own thinking and way of looking at life. I was listening to Sara Groves the other night (as I often do) and was remembering when you told me you really loved the song 'The Word'. Funny how music triggers memories...Grace was playing Ben Folds recently - she loves his song 'Gracie' (and is now learning it on the piano). If you were here we could go to Narrabeen Pool for a swim (although we would still have to take turns watching the kids while the other person swims). 41: Dear Sarah As I write this letter to you I am sitting outside, in the mid west of WA, with flies buzzing around, an Australian gum tree hanging overhead, gravel under my feet and an afternoon breeze blowing through my hair. It reminds me of our wonderful times together in the northwest - where you quickly became a treasured, lifelong and most beautiful friend. But going back a bit more, I can recall this wonderful couple I first met at Tim's 30th – they intrigued me. They were bounding in energy, so accepting, so welcoming and obviously so fond of the man I had just literally started to date. I couldn’t help but be attracted to their beauty, and so it was, the start to an amazing friendship I will always treasure. Shortly after arriving in Dampier I was struck by Ross with his 5kg of BBQ'd octopus and you with your new Gourmet Traveler magazine recipes; and then your prowess and determination at perfecting meringues while consistently taking out second prize; cooking Osso Bucco while camping (or in your case, swaging) with the outback as your kitchen; your passion for keeping fit and healthy - for being able to motivate me to literal exhaustion on our morning ride around Dampier (and your kindness in looking after me when I couldn't get back on my bike!); your passion for goodness, both in yourself and in helping others to seek it; for opening up your home to endless guests, including us in your beautiful Mona Vale home; for sharing your family with us all and for making us all feel ‘all the better’ for just spending that little bit of time with you; for coming West to holiday at Rotto and in the drenched Margaret River; and let's not forget your passion for adventure - sleeping diagonally across the bed, for sleeping on the verandah (when a perfectly comfortable bed is only meters away), for flying across the world with toddlers with gastro, for moving countries with 4 small children - learning new cultures and languages, and for managing to see the sunshine in any and every situation you find yourself in... Sarah we love you, we miss you, but we know that God has you in the palm of his hand and one day we'll be cooking Osso Bucco together again. Till that day know that we think of you often, that we are so grateful for the way you light up our lives and for the care you give our little Sarah as her godmother. 42: Dear Sarah, We were destined to be friends right from the start! Those Karratha days seem like such a long time ago.but what fun we had! You were and still are a soul mate of mine no matter where in this world you are!!! We have shared some great times together. I loved our camping adventures with the Pipers especially camping along a billabong and you cooking us all a three course meal by candle light on a Friday night when were all too tired to do anything but stare into the fire I remember the fun we had triathlon training in Dampier not that I was ever going to out run, out swim let alone out run you! The only thing I could ever out run you for was marathon shopping. I loved it that you brought baby Sam over to Perth, I did your colours in between cuddling your baby and the next day we shopped like crazy whilst at the same trying to dutifully not loose your precious Sam! You did look absolutely amazing but it was such a fun and crazy time together! I loved it when you taught me how to correctly cream butter and sugar and how horrified you were by my first attempt and I still think of you every time I do this! After all this was coming from you the Dessert Queen of the Desert! At this point I won't mention that you did get second prize in a Pavlova competition and you were the only entry! I can also remind you that the following year some of your dear friend’s joined the competition and you remained queen of second place and that the year after you had left Dampier much to your horror I entered your name in the competition and submitted it having made it with a Shake a Pav!!! You were and still are such a baking purist! What is not to love about that? We finally came over to Sydney and met you and your growing family.with a great day on the Northern Beachesit was a hoot with the rescue helicopter, and your kids loved it!...We also got to spend time at your beloved Nook. I can appreciate why you have loved it so much. The beauty of the country side is breath taking and your soul can be nourished and reawaked there! Rotto Holidays! Our last trip together we had a magical sunset swim at the basin. It was two friends yet again just being together at a very special point in time. I have loved thinking about you and all that you mean to me. You are a caring, kind and thoughtful great fellow traveler on this journey of life. Sharing our lives honestly from the heart is one of the greatest things I love about you. We have laughed and prayed together through the good times and the bad. Unfortunately the time zones that you like to live tend to not always work in with our time zonesand yet you are there. I will always appreciate the effort you made to come to Perth when I had my baby shower. Those are the blessings of friendship. You have an incredible energy for God who inspires and drives you along your travels. I will continue to hope and pray that one day you will realize that West is Best and we that we can live together again in the same state and metropolitan area and time zone! I know how hard it is to celebrate these milestones away from those who love and appreciate you but believe me when I say we are all thinking of you and wishing we could celebrate with you in person. 49: Happy Birthday Sarah. Hope the next 40 years are as fun as the past have been and also hope that we get to see you while you are in your prime. Ross has asked us to mention one or two things we appreciate about you. Well, number one would have to be your hospitality - always ready to welcome us to your place and prepare meals, even when having just produced, or about to produce, another baby...! Your easy going nature is great, as is your infectious laugh! We have terrific memories of some nice shared times including Central Australia, Blackheath, Dubrovnik and skiing in Innsbruck. 51: Each decade of my life is peppered with your smile - hot chocolates, bus rides, Sand Groping, babies and the Blues are fully spiced. Such a welcome, a coming home is captured in my sights and it is impossible to remain 'grown up'. Even though we are now 40, when we are together, we will always be 8 years old. Truth is your gift to me, a rare find in this world of mirrors and monopoly. Never shying from questions surrounding my Faith, my walk or personal world and openly you offer me your life of struggles and triumphs in return. What Truer, more precious comrade can be found? 52: I find it very special that we don’t seem to have difficulties “finding each other again” even if we have not seen each other for a long time. I love just talking to you. I really appreciate your positive attitude and your openness towards the world. I admire your ability to engage and be present. I have very fond memories of our time in Montenegro when we got to know each other. I feel lucky that we have managed to continue to build our friendship despite the distance and my lack of communication. These days I love our walks around The Nook and the chats we have while we take in the beautiful views. I love seeing our kids playing together while enjoying a cup of coffee or a glass of wine with you, Ross and Scott. I hope that you are looking forward to being in the 40ties as I trust that you later in life will look back at your 40ties with fondness. I truly believe that we will continue to see each other and really hope that you will come to see us this summer in Denmark. It would be wonderful to show you my home country and return some of the incredible hospitality that we have received in Australia over the years.
