S: Terrence & Kristi

BC: Life is not about how many breathes you take, but about the moments that take your breath away.

1: Dear Birth parents, Our names are Terrence and Kristi and we want to take this opportunity to thank you for taking time to get to know us. It is apparent that you love your unborn child as you are making this very difficult decision for him or her. Since our first meeting with you cannot be in person, we hope this letter will sufficiently introduce you to our family. We met in the summer of June 2002, on a blind date arranged by Kristi's dad. Kristi wasn't interested in Terrence at first, but after going on a few outings with friends, it was clear we were meant to be together. We were engaged in October 2002, married March 22, 2003 and happily married ever since. As a couple, we are the ultimate tag team. When one is feeling down or exhausted, the other one picks them up. Happiness is just a contagious thing in our marriage. We love practical jokes, teasing and laughing in general. Besides, laughter is the best medicine, right? After getting married, we tried to start a family, but were unsuccessful. Adoption has always been something we wanted to do, so when we had difficulty, there was no question what the next step was. We welcomed our beautiful daughter, Bekah, into our arms on December 20, 2005. Our church is a major part of our lives, we volunteer on a regular basis and attend every Sunday and Wednesday. Kristi spends her spare time either sewing or taking pictures. She loves to make things, especially for Bekah. Terrence spends his time playing video games or working on electronics. He's just like a big kid in this aspect. Together as a family we enjoy going to the movies, playing at the park, paddle boating in our subdivision lake, playing games outside (our favorite is ladder ball), or just hanging around the house playing board games. As a family, we really enjoy taking vacations together. Our favorite vacation spot lately has been Disney World. Bekah has been twice and would love to go again. Every time we go we spend ten days there, staying on property and getting the dining plan. The last time we went, Terrence and Kristi ran the marathon in January. It was definitely an interesting experience and was a lot of fun. Bekah even got to run her own kid race while there. She got a medal and everything! Bekah is a silly little brown-eyed girl, full of energy, super intelligent and always wanting to please. She picks up on things really quickly, sometimes too quickly, in fact! We think it is awesome that she likes to dress herself and has a quirky sense of style. We are firm believers that kids should be allowed to express themselves, even if that means cowboy boots with a fancy dress. Bekah is excited about having a new brother or sister and helping to care for them. She is even starting to think of names! Some of Bekah's quirky traits may have come from Kristi as she shares some of these qualities. Kristi definitely marches to the beat of her own drum, just like Bekah. She is creative, funny and great with kids. Her major weakness is that she trusts absolutely everyone and has a hard time saying "no" when asked to help. Sometimes she over-books herself because she doesn't want to disappoint anyone, but she is working on it and Terrence is guiding her when things are getting too busy.

2: Terrence is a strong, faithful and loving husband and father. He loves a good joke, but also knows when it is time to get down to business. He runs the house and ensures everything gets done on schedule. As strong as he is, his weakness is happy endings in movies. He cries more than Kristi, but that's all right, it's endearing. Both Terrence and Kristi went to public schools through high school, both making excellent grades. Terrence graduated Valedictorian in his class (summa cum laude), excelling in math. Kristi was in the top 10 percent of her class (magna cum laude), excelling in music. Terrence attended Louisiana Tech University and received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, while Kristi attended the University of Houston and received her Bachelor of Music Education degree. Once again, they both graduated with honors from college and were also in the Golden Key Honor Society. We both enjoyed school and learning, which is probably why we still enjoy learning new things. We are currently both employed full-time at jobs we love. Terrence works as a Service Center Manager for the industrial division of a large corporation. Kristi is a music teacher at a local elementary school and also a part-time photographer (she would do that one for free if she could). Both will continue to work once the baby arrives, but with a modified schedule if needed. Our home is two-stories and 3,000 square feet with 4 bedrooms, a playroom and a media room. We have a nice, large backyard with lots of grass for running and playing in. When decorating our home we made sure it was child friendly. We even have child safety equipment in place like outlet covers and cabinet locks. Our decorating preference is simple, yet elegant, nothing over the top. The playground/park we go to most of the time is a 5 minute bike ride or 10 minute walk away from our house. Our neighborhood has wonderful amenities: fishing, paddle boating, frisbee golf, miles of nature trails, a wonderful pool with a baby/toddler area, splash pads, and several activities a month to get out and about like family movie night in the park. Sammy, Poppy, and Ollie are our furbabies, also known as dogs. The oldest one is Sammy, he is elderly and doesn't move around much. Poppy and Ollie are best friends, they play together and even sleep right next to each other while napping. All three of the dogs are sweet and gentle. We have been socializing Ollie since we got him July 2012. They are all very well behaved around strangers and want to get pet most of all. Our extended family is over the moon excited about us adopting again. They love Bekah more than words can say and were ecstatic when we told them we would be adding to our family again. Kristi’s family lives about 10 minutes away and are very active in our lives. We meet on Friday evenings for dinner each week. Most holidays like Halloween, Easter, and Valentine’s Day are spent with Kristi’s family (parents, two sisters and their significant others, and their kids). Christmas and Thanksgiving are typically split between spending time with Kristi and Terrence’s families. The kids are the focal point of all the holidays. At Halloween we make fun games, scavenger hunts, and activities just for them. Kids are definitely the center of attention in this family. Terrence’s family lives in Arkansas and Idaho (one brother). We make it up there when we can, Bekah enjoys visiting. When Terrence’s parents come to visit they have no problems with spoiling her rotten! On holidays we cannot spend with them, we make sure to call them and spend some time with them even if it is just on the phone.

3: Other family traditions include going to Kristi’s sister’s house for a pool party on the 4th of July, participate in summer swim team with our subdivision (Bekah is getting really good-she’s a fish!), going to Wichita to visit Kristi’s relatives during the summer, going to Sea World San Antonio for a few days each summer with Kristi’s sister, and visiting Disney World every other year. We also enjoy typical traditions, like have a nice big dinner after church on Sunday. We attend a large Southern Baptist church with a very active children’s ministry. Our children’s pastors are fabulous and very supportive of our kids. One of the pastors adopted his children, so he understands the process involved. Our child will be aware that he or she is adopted from the time they are born. We found this to be helpful with Bekah. Something as simple as a doctor’s appointment could raise questions about adoption for our child. If we are not open with him or her, that could create a stressful situation. When our child is old enough, we will do the same as we did with Bekah and discuss his or her birth parents, show pictures, and even explain the days leading up to his or her birth. For us, this was a special time for Bekah. She was five years old when she asked what it meant to be adopted. When we explained it to her, she understood and started asking about what her birth parents looked like. We immediately pulled out the pictures we had and read her the birth story we wrote when she was born. Now instead of being insulted when a child tries to be mean and say, “you’re adopted”, she is proud and just smiles. We would love to have a semi-open adoption. This would include pictures, letters and even phone calls. It is important to us that the birth parents are involved in the baby’s life at a comfortable level. We feel this helps the child grow up understanding why they were adopted and that they are loved by not only us, the adoptive parents, but also you, the birth parents. The decision you are making for your child is both difficult and incredibly brave. We admire your strength and courage to go on this journey for your unborn child. We are already praying for the birth parents of our child as we know the importance of this time in your life. It is important for us to be warm, loving, supportive parents and we would love to welcome another child into our home We offer a lifetime of gratitude for your amazing gift. . Thank you for taking the time to read our story. We wish you all the best and are praying for a peaceful decision. Sincerely, Terrence and Kristi Shepherd
