FC: ELIZABETH WOLFE FERRIS FAMILY

Elizabeth Wolfe Ferris was our great grandmother and mother of Lydia Sara Ferris Heintz. Elizabeth Catherine Wolfe was born on Nov. 15, 1854 in Rowville (Baltic), Ohio to Valentine and Amanda Berkey Wolfe. Elizabeth was first married to James Alleshouse. They had 5 children. After the death of James in 1886, Elizabeth married William T. Ferris, a widower with 3 children. Elizabeth and William were parents to 5 children. William died in 1904. Elizabeth then had a brief marriage with Benjamin Bitikofer. After her divorce from Benjamin, she went by Elizabeth Ferris. Elizabeth died Nov. 14, 1932 and is buried in the Dover Park Cemetery. On the following pages of this book is the family history of Elizabeth Wolfe. The first part will be of the Wolfe Family, the second part will be the family history of the children of James Alleshouse and Elizabeth and the third part will be of the children of William T. Ferris and Elizabeth. The fourth part is to his first marriage, step-siblings to Lydia. The last part will be random pictures of the Elizabeth Wolfe Ferris and William T. Ferris families.

THE WOLFE FAMILY | Elizabeth Wolfe was the daughter of Valentine and Amanda Catherine Berkey Wolfe. Valentine Wolfe was the son of John and Susan Dorothea Long/Lang Wolfe. Amanda was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Grove Berkey. John Wolfe was born Sept. 27, 1792 in Hessen, Hamburg, Germany. Susanna was born Aug. 7, 1810 in Bavaria, Germany. John and Dorothea arrived in the United States on July 22, 1836 on the Ship, Francis Dupau, port of departure was Harve, France. The children with them were Jacob, Valentine and Christian. Christian is listed as Christina, a daughter, this is incorrect. The following children were born in Bucks township, Tuscarawas county, Ohio: John G, Philip W., Catherine P., Lewis and Ferdinand Wolfe. John Wolf died Dec. 18, 1873 in White Eyes, Twp,, Coshocton Co., Ohio. Dorothea died Feb. 13, 1866 in Crawford Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio. They are both buried in the German Reformed Church Cemetery,in Crawford Twp., Coshocton County, Sec. A., Row 5.

Jacob Wolfe was born Feb. 1, 1833 in Hessian, Germany. He died May 27, 1903 at his brother Christian Wolfe's home in Dundee, Ohio. Jacob was a carpenter and had served in the 51st OVI, Company H during the Civil War. He never married. Valentine Wolfe was born about 1834 in Bavaria, Bayern, Germany and died between July 27, 1899 and June 4, 1900. I cannot find a cemetery record or a death record for Valentine. It is possible that he is also buried in the same cemetery as his parents and his oldest son, Johannes. Valentine married Amanda Elizabeth Berkey on March 12, 1854 in Bucks Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Amanda was born April 13, 1834 in Farmerstown, Ohio and died Feb. 22, 1920 in Canton, Ohio. She is listed as a widow in the June 1900 census. Her father, William Berkey paid $12 for a lot in Rowville and was the first to build a house in Rowville (per 1884 History of Tuscarawas Co.). Valentine and Amanda are our great great grandparents.

Some articles found: July 8, 1881, Dover Weekly Argus Valentine Wolf, from Rowville, gave us a nice street parade the other day with a donkey hitched to a little two-wheeled vehicle. He beats Barnum. March 18, 1897, Tuscarawas Advocate, Baltic News Mr. V. Wolfe is able to be out after a three month illness. July 27, 1899, New Phila Times Jacob Wolf of Avondale spent Saturday and Sunday at V. Wolf's. The children of Valentine and Amanda were: Elizabeth Catherine, our great grandmother. Johannes Amos, born March 17, 1856, died Sept. 25, 1858 Cevilla Wolf, born Aug. 16, 1858, married Fred Thomas, died Aug. 19, 1924 in Canton, Ohio. She had two daughters, Mary who died in 1886, and Lelia. Lelia married Henry Shadle. She died Feb. 17, 1913 of tuberculosis. Lelia did not have any children. Mary Wolf, born March 4, 1863, married first Adam Diefenbach, 2nd an Evans, died Aug. 31, 1934 in Canton, Ohio. Her children were Adrian, Dorothy and Ruth.

Alonzo Adam Wolf was born Sept. 22, 1865 and died March 14, 1945 in Canton, Ohio. He never married. He worked as a billing clerk for the railroad. Leetta Wolf was born Nov. 4, 1867 and died Feb. 15, 1904 of consumption (tuberculosis) in Canton, Ohio. Etta did not marry. Almeda Wolf was born July 9, 1870 and died Nov. 27, 1881. Almeda died from typhoid fever. Savannah Atlanta Wolf was born May 12, 1873 in Coshocton Co., Ohio and died March 11, 1853 in Tacoma, Washington. She married Benjamin Archer in 1923 in Pierce Co., Washington. She was a teacher. She did not have children. | The picture is of Savannah Wolfe, her graduation picture in 1890 She is a sister to our great grandmother, Elizabeth Wolfe Ferris.

Christian Wolf, 3rd son of John and Susan, was born either in Dec. 1835 or Nov. 1934. He married Delilah Everhart in Coshocton County, Oh. He lived mostly in Dundee, Wayne Twp., Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. His children were: Sarah Catherine, Barbara Ann, Susannah Dorothy, Louis and Clara J. Wolfe. Christian died Aug. 30, 1913 in Dundee. | Sarah married John Domer, Barbara wed George Ervin, Susannah married James Scott, Louis married Mary Mizer and Clara wed Elmer Baker.

John G. Wolfe John was a colorful character. He was born June 24, 1837 in Rowville and died March 3, 1914 in Fresno, Coshocton County. He lived with his sister, Catherine Wolfe Thomas, and never married. He served in the 51st OVI, Company H during the Civil War. He was a prisoner in the Libby Prison at Richmond, Virginia. The following articles are a snippet of John's life. March 4, 1914 JOHN WOLFE, ECCENTRIC CITIZEN GOES TO REWARD John Wolfe, aged 77, a life long resident of the Fresno vicinity died Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the family home near Fresno where he and his sister, Catherine Wolfe Thomas, had lived for many years. Mr. Wolfe's death followed a long continued illness of Bright's disease. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 o'clock in the Methodist church in Fresno and burial will take place in the Fairview cemetery at Fresno. One incident of Mr. Wolfe's life will be readily called to mind by almost every older resident of Coshocton county. Mr. Wolfe was always a staunch Democrat and at the time of the Election of President Garfield he was so annoyed that he vowed that he would not have his hair cut until the election of a democratic President - consequently with the election of Grover Cleveland, Wolfe came to Coshocton and on the courthouse steps in the presence of a crowd of witnesses had his long locks removed.

March 3, 1914 JOHN WOLF GOES TO HIS LONG HOME, ECCENTRIC DEMOCRAT Following many months of illness with Bright's disease, John Wolfe, 82, died at his home in Fresno and was one of the oldest residents of Coshocton County. He was a Democrat and one of the staunchest supporters the party every had. At the time of Garfield was elected President his disappointment was so keen that he swore he would never cut his hair until a Democrat was in the President's chair. He kept his vow faithfully and when Grover Cleveland took the chair a number of years later, Mr. Wolfe had his long locks, which reached far below his shoulders, cut as he sat on the steps of the court house, surrounded by a curious crowd. Many residents of Coshocton remember the scene well and the story is often told to the younger generation. Mr. Wolfe never married. He made his home with his sister, Mrs. Katherine Wolfe Thomas. Funeral services will probably be held sometime Thursday and burial in the Fairview cemetery in Fresno. In an article dated Nov. 18, 1884 (see back of book) states that John G. Wolf bears scars on his face received from many an attack on "dog-leg" and "tomika green" tobacco - must be some powerful tobacco to leave scars!

May 24, 1911 | Oct. 18, 1912 | Oct. 17, 1912 | Feb. 4, 1898 John Wolf of this vicinity has returned from Zanesville where he had an operation performed upon his eye and is now slowly recovering.

The 5th son of John and Susan Dorothy Wolf was Philip W. Wolf, born March 24, 1841 and died April 27, 1910 in Niles, Trumbull Co., Ohio. He lived most of his life in Coshocton and was a fireman. Philip married Mary Sommers and had 8 children: Althea, died Feb. 24, 1900, Rufus John, Louisa C., Willis "Jack" Wright, Philip F., Lewis Edward, Charles Edmund and Frank Elmer. Althea married Herman Berkhart. She had one daughter that died young. Rufus wed Margaret Feasley - children were William and Harold. Louisa wed George Holland, no children. Willis married Drucilla Potter - their children were Willis, Philip, and Clifford. Philip wed Anna Casner. He died Dec. 12, 1909 in a railroad accident. No children. Lewis married Matilda Layton. Their children were Mary, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Georgia, Lewis, Walter, Robert and Carl. However, Carl may actually be a son of Guy Lynn. Charles wed Elizabeth Yeager and their children were Charles, Frank, Lester, Clyde, Fred, Earl , Harry, Edward, Grover and Lillian. Frank married Bessie Payner and they had one son, Kermit. Catherine Wolf, the only daughter, was born Aug. 1845 in Rowville (Baltic) and died Aug. 21, 1919. Catherine married Philip Thomas on Oct. 26, 1893 in Coshocton. He died Jan. 3, 1895, 1 year, 2 months and a few days after their marriage. She resumed living with her brother, John G. Wolf. I imagine it was not easy living with John. Of course, Catherine may have been just as stubborn. Lewis Wolf was born about 1847 and died unknown. I could not find what happened to him. He is listed in Jacob's Will as living out west. That was in 1903.

Ferdinand Wolf, youngest child of John and Susanna Wolfe was born April 4, 1848 in Rowville (Baltic). He married Mary Graybill. They had one daughter, Leanora, born April 1878 in Muskingum Co., Ohio. Leanora married an Ed Wolfe (no relation). Ferdinand died May 21, 1930 in Plain twp, Stark Co., Ohio. He was a broom-maker. Our great grandmother, Elizabeth Catharine Wolfe, daughter of Valentine and Amanda Wolfe, married James Monroe Alleshouse on Nov. 9, 1873, probably in Brandywine, Dover Twp., Ohio. James and Elizabeth's children were: Anna M. Alleshouse, born May 28, 1876, married Henry Turney. They had one daughter, Lelia Elizabeth. Anna died Feb. 19, 1953 in Wooster, Ohio at her daughter's home. Cevilla Katherine Alleshouse was born July 26, 1878 in Brandywine, Ohio and died Dec. 16, 1862 in Dover, OHio. She first married Emiel Lenarz. He was abusive and they divorced. With Emil, she had Alvin, George, and Frank. My father, Robert Heintz, was very close with George Lenarz. George was his best man at his wedding. Frank, a handsome man, was constantly in trouble, it seemed. Frank did not marry. Alvin married Daisy Zorn Lewis. They had one son, Gary L. Lenarz. George wed Charlotte Steffey. Their children are Armand and Sandra.

After Cevilla's divorce from Emil, she married Fred Smith on Sept. 29, 1917. Their children were William, Carl, and Florence. Bill and Carl Smith were also very close with Robert Heintz. Cevilla died Dec. 16, 1962 in Dover. Bill and his wife Helen did not have any children. Carl and Dorothy had 2 sons, Thomas and John. John died serving in the Vietnam War on April 15, 1969. Florence married Paul Roberts, 3 children, Kathy, Debbie and Fred. Carl died Dec. 23, 1985, Bill died June 22, 2008 and Florence died May 11, 2001 In March, 1941, Frank Lenarz set fire to Fred Smith's clothing. The fire was put out by Bill and Carl Smith, and Jesse Lenarz, an uncle of Frank's. Frank was sent to prison and released in 1944. The third and fifth children of James and Elizabeth were: Luella Dorothy Alleshouse was born about 1880. This is just a guess as I cannot find anything on her except from what Lydia Heintz had told Bettie Heintz. Lydia also told Bettie that there was a son Jerry. I found a Jeremiah Alleshouse, born about 1885, (birth date is a guess) and died bet 1899 - Jan. 1900. The 4th child of James and Elizabeth Alleshouse was James Vinton Alleshouse. He was born June 5, 1883 and died June 16, 1941 in the County Infirmary. He never married . Elizabeth and James lived together, mainly due to the Great Depression. Jim, as he was called, was a cement maker and did odd jobs. He may had been a favorite of Elizabeth as Lydia had expressed her opinion as told to Vivian by Robert.

William and Mary had 3 children, Emily "Etta", John and Charles. Mary died Sept. 25, 1887 in Wayne County, Ohio. The children of Elizabeth Wolfe and William Ferris were Jennie, Amanda, Lydia (our grandmother), William and Nina. According to Robert, William T. Ferris was a heavy drinker. He went to Dover in a horse and buggy. On his trip home, he died in the buggy and the horse brought him home. Ohio Democrat and Times, Jan. 21, 1904, Thursday A farmer by the name of William Ferris fell dead Saturday night on his return from a shopping trip to Dover, heart trouble being the cause. Ferris was in poor circumstances and leaves a wife and four children. In Jan. 1896, William and family had attended a tent revival in Brandywine. Shortly after, William was accused by a neighbor of having improper contact with his (William's) stepdaughter, Cevilla.

The fifth child of William and Elizabeth was born Aug. 25, 1901 and died Aug. 27, 1901. I had found a funeral record for a female baby. I could not find any official birth or death record for her. I am unsure of the name. It could be Nina or Dorothy. She is buried in the Brandywine cemetery. She does not have a headstone. According to the 1900 census, Elizabeth had 9 children with 7 living. The 10th child would have been William Harold and the eleventh would be the baby. I can only account for 10 children. The two that died before 1900 would have been Luella Dorothy and Jeremiah. The third child of William and Elizabeth was my grandmother, Lydia Sara Ferris. Lydia was born May 16, 1898 in Brandywine, Dover township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She died at nearly age 81 on Feb. 25, 1979.
