FC: Alaska Family Trip | August 2011

1: August 11-22, 2011 Thur., 8/11 - Landed late, ice cream with Deb, drove RV to Deb's Fri., 8/12 - Celebrated Alyssa's birthday with Grandma Dee Dee, stayed at Fox River Campground Sat., 8/13 - Sat. Market in Anchorage, Alyeska Tram, Portage Glacier, stayed at Kenai River Princess RV Park - hot tub Sun., 8/14, Rainy - Scenic float on Kenai River & 2 hour horseback ride. Stoney Creek RV Park near Seward (2N) Mon., 8/15 - Cracker Jack Fishing (halibut & salmon) for guys and Kenai Fjords Captain's Choice tour for girls. Gotta love those whales & puffins! Tuesday, 8/16 - Drove to Denali, lunch with Grandma & ice cream at Talkneetna. Stayed at Denali Grizzly Bear (2N) Wed., 8/17 - Bus to Eielson Visitor Center Thursday, 8/18 - Drove to Fairbanks (Pioneer Park & Museum of the North) Fri., 8/19 - River's Edge Discovery Cruise Sat., 8/20 - Drove to Deb's Sun., 8/21 - Spent time with Deb, Max, Grandma Dee Dee and Aurora (their puppy) Mon., 8/22 - Spent day in Wasilla, HOME

2: On the way to Alaska, our plane had personal TV screens so we enjoyed watching movies.

3: DENALI, "The High One" | As we approached Anchorage, we were able to see Denali and lots of beautiful scenery

5: Celebrated Alyssa's Birthday with Grandma Dee Dee At Primrose

6: Fox Run Campgrounds - Wasilla, AK

7: RV Living in Alaska - Nice views of the lake and first fishing on the trip

8: RV Driving in Alaska There's nothing like the scenery in Alaska... You never know what wildlife or beauty is around the corner

9: We had minor problems with RV but overall it was a great way to see Alaska. Some of my favorite scenery was in the Seward Area

10: Anchorage - Sat. Market | Anchorage Saturday Market | Nick bought presents for his family - carrying the Beaver slippers for Jill.

11: Food | Parking | Shopping

12: Turnagain Arm Tossing rocks in the water, watching trains go by, looking for Dall sheep and climbing... Huge flux in tides - easy to get stuck out too far on sand bars.

14: Portage Glacier Skipped rocks... Megan & Nick picked up the glacier ice.

16: Mike went to Alyeska for his mom's 75th Birthday in January 2011. We enjoyed the tram & beautiful views of Girdwood Area. Spectacular grounds...

17: Alyeska Resort is the only 4 star resort in Alaska

18: We took a scenic float out of Coopers Landing near Seward. It was a rainy day but fun to see salmon, fly fisherman & campers. Our guide was from Minnesota.

20: Two hours of horseback riding with AK Horseman Trail Adventures - near Coopers Landing | It rained in the am so it was a wet ride. Lots of fun going at all the gaits & enjoying nature at it's best!

21: Alyssa's 1st choice for FUN! It was Nick's 1st time riding horseback. He did awesome!

22: Our guide showed us some trick riding. We saw an old miner's cabin, fly fishing on the stream & Kenai lake!

23: Yippee! We're going horseback riding! We enjoyed it! (Especially Alyssa)

24: Cracker Jack Fishing- Seward, AK | Cold, rainy day - went way out to Montague Island in search of the big ones... | They caught their limit of salmon & halibut | August 15th

27: Kenai Fjords Wildlife Tour - Seward Glaciers, puffins, sea lions, sea otters, bald eagle and WHALES!

28: Humpback & Orca Whales... | Resurrection Bay - Seward | It's amazing to me how whales can be so fast considering how huge they are...

30: Drive to Denali August 16th

31: Lunch in Wasilla Ice Cream in Talkneetna, view of Denali LONG DRIVE

33: Bus Ride to Eielson Center in Denali National Park

37: Facts: Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, 800 Miles Constructed '74-'77 - 54 animal crossings, 3 mountain ranges crossed, 34 major rivers crossed Pipe is 48" diameter Capacity - 9 Million barrels | Pigs monitor condition of pipeline & improve it's flow.

38: We stayed at River's Edge in Fairbanks on the Nenana River. Nick enjoyed whittling his walking stick, we ate salmon, fished, talked with a British couple & enjoyed their dog, Brakken.

39: Fairbanks Cabin of Harry Karstens, Co-leader of 1st Climb of Mt. McKinley & Superintendent of Denali | President Harding's Car | S. S. Nenana

40: Amazing displays - High School Diploma on moose hide, fishing stool (above), sculptures, paintings, and Imax movies. | Museum of the North, Faribanks

41: Fairbanks Beauty | Musk ox

42: Riverboat Discovery Cruise, Fairbanks - Aug. 19th, 2011

43: We enjoyed hearing about native culture, seeing iditrarod dogs & trainers (Alyssa with Lance Mackey's puppy)

44: Everyone enjoyed Aurora, their puppy. We also enjoyed a fish fry & a game of washers.

46: Primrose Community Wasilla, AK

47: It was good to visit with Grandma Dee Dee several times in her new home and to see her apartment. She has lots of amenities - pool room, movie theater, ice cream parlour and exercise room.
