12: Cordes Homestead- History and Memories Land was purchased in 1847, followed by more land in 1951 under the Homestead Act singed by Millard Fillmore this document resides in the home to this day. Other expantion land was purchased from the Wabash & Erie Canal Lands. for the price of $80.40. Following the death of Johann in 1880 Maria became the owner of the homestead farm. In 1905 after marring Minnie Freytag and having six children John purchaced the land from his mother, Maria. In 1906 the frame house was replaced with a two-story twelve-room two bath brick house. Water for indoor purposes was supplied by rainwater from the eaves spouts to water tanks in the attic and the second floor bathroom. Gravity then furnished water to the bathrooms and kitchen. The house was heated by a hot water heating system fired by a coal/wood furance. Gas lights were used around 1922 when electricity was installed. According to Phylis, John's granddaughter to have bathroom's in the home was quite scandalous for that time, it was considered "unclean".
