FC: Our Family History | World War 1
My dad and the other men of the town left for the war a month ago. A lot has happened since then, my mom had to start working in a local factory do to lack of employees and the absence of my father and our main source of income. Now that i think about it, many women in my town are taking up mens work. | Mother
tHE gREAT mIGRATION | The great migration was a stressful time for my mom in the sense of job security. A great mass of African Americans were moving north in search of factory work. This made all of us and our families expendable.
1918 Flu Epidemic | My family grew weaker as the flu epidemic came and went. We lost my uncle, grandpa, and my beloved sister Janete | Grandpa | Uncle | Baby Sister
Today after mom got off work from the factories, We went out and bot tons of war bonds to support the war.
Working in ammunition factories in WW1 was dangerous, hard work. The workers were exposed to dangerous chemicals and poisons with little or no protection as well as explosives. Women in some of the factories were nicknamed canaries because their skin took on a yellow hue due to exposure of sulfur.
The men would of course go and fight in the front lines. This left the women and children to go and work in factories and gave job opportunities to African Americans. My mom worked in a steel factory and she told me that they were asked to make rounds of ammo and bomb casings!
The Great War has caused quite a stir-up among the Americans. anti-German hysteria was like a rapidly spreading disease. I actually heard that some German Americans were tarred and feathered and there are rumors of lynchings.
Today my mom told me I have to start to watch what I say about America. She told me that some people are starting to get arrested for talking bad about the war! We ha learned about our rights in school but I thought they couldn't be taken away. Maybe I was wrong?
Hey guys! Its been quite a while since I've been drafted. things aren't exactly pretty out here. From what I have heard the Germans are brutal and cruel. And the new weapons out these days don't slow the destruction. these machine guns scare me out of my mind. I wish it wasn't true but this war has changed me, hardened me. Keep me in you prayers, I will write again soon.
