S: Grandpa's Farm
FC: Grandpa's Farm | By: Jordan Smith | 2002 | Fremont High School - Agriculture Class
 In memory of: Darrel Westwood
My grandpa has a farm. His farm is a beef cattle farm. He worked on his uncles farm when he was a boy, and that's what started this whole thing.
For some reason the whole idea of a farm, growing things, raising animals, and being on the land was all that my grandpa wanted to do. So his goal was to someday have a farm of his own.
Farms cost money, so how could he make enough money to fulfill his dream? I don't think even he knew at the time how he would make this big dream come true.
When he was eighteen years old , there was a war going on in our country. It was called World War II. He like most young men his age decided to go to war and serve his country. It was lonely being so far away from home , but he told me it made him grow up real fast.
Because my grandpa had a dream, this gave him an idea. If he saved most of the money that he made and sent it home to his dad and mom, then they could take care of it for him.
So, while a lot of his buddies were spending all their money and having fun when they could, my grandpa was working hard not to spend his. He was gone for a very long time. This gave him a lot of time to save. | At last the war ended and he was able to come home.
Now, he was working again. This time at an air force base close to his home. He still saved what money he could. | He knew that someday his dream would come true, but now he was interested in finding someone to share his dream.
He found a cute girl on the base one day and she is now my grandma. She was from the city and liked that kind of life. I think my grandpa waited a while before he shared his dream with her. He painted a really nice picture. She could start to see what he saw.
One day he heard about this farm for sale. it was in a place called Kanesville. It was a very small town with one tiny little grocery store and one little old church. There were lots of other farms though.
My grandpa bought his dream, but he didn't live there. Every day after work he would drive to his farm and spend the rest of the daylight hours working hard to build up his farm. He had to start out with one old tractor and any other old used implements that he could find.
He worked the ground. He grew some crops. He sold the crops, he saved the money and with that money he bought cows. He bought beef cows called Herefords. He would buy a few at a time as he could afford them. Now, he had to raise the crops and keep them to feed his own cows. Every spring there would be new baby calves added to the herd. Soon it was much bigger.
By this time in grandpa's life he also had one son and two daughters who helped when they could on the farm. | Well, life changed somewhat on that farm, one of his little daughters was taken ill and died. Though life was sadder, they still went on and so did the farm. Soon after that, grandpa had another son who brought happiness back to the family.
This seemed to happen awful fast to grandpa, but one day those kids were all grown up. They still helped on the farm when they could, grandpa was getting older and more tired. The good thing was that one son lived at home a little longer while going to college, so he helped with the farm a lot more.
The other good thing that happened was that his daughter had three sons of her own. The best thing is that I am one of those sons. Now, I help grandpa on the farm. I go down to the farm every day after school and feed the herd of cows. In the summer I help with watering and harvesting the crops.
There is always something to be done on the farm. Grandpa's farm has been one of the best experiences of my life so far. My dream would be that some day my sons and daughters could have a grandpa's farm like me.
 The End.
