1: We offer this book with love, appreciation and gratitude to our mother Lillian Rosemarie Normandeau Pampush. You nurtured us with conviction but an open mind, encouraged inquisitiveness and exploration and instilled in us the importance of hard work and education. Through your example we learned early on to respect and appreciate women of strong character. Your life so far, in part celebrated here, serves as a model to all of us. -- Your sons 28 May 2011

2: On May 28, 1926 an infant girl came into the world in Boston. She would shape, create and influence worlds...

3: Her ancestry traces from France with a New World landing in Canada. Armand (Pepere) Normandeau, Lillian's father, immigrated from Canada. It is said that he walked. Beatrice (Memere), Lillian's mother, was born in New Hampshire, but her family heritage, the Hebert clan, was recently Canadian also. (A whispered rumor is that Huron blood is mixed in as well....)

4: .Little did she know then...that by accident of nature, she would live mostly surrounded by men...and in charge, of course.... | Lillian circa 3 years old

12: Ambitious and adventuresome, nursing took Lillian to Los Angeles, New York City and Saint Louis University

13: Ambitious and adventuresome, Lillian's choice of nursing took her to Los Angeles, New York City and Saint Louis University....

14: Whether through nursing training, native disposition or both, Lillian brought a natural calm and focus to all elevated situations in life....and of course with six boys, there were many...

15: Serious about career....and also single......Ah, there are stories of this time of life her children will never hear...

18: But then she and Jim Pampush met in St. Louis in 1951 working in the same hospital... | .....And, owing to a coincidence of roommate and popular radio show, Lillian's name was forever changed by Jim to "Mike". | In courtship a man pursues a woman until she catches him.... Proverbs

22: Bermuda Honeymoon

24: Honeymoon bliss...

25: Newlyweds in Seattle

26: Seattle life --no kids... yet....

27: Lillian with her first born during her migration eastward -- Glacier National Park | The enfabled bears which, in Lillian's telling, nearly took her firstborn... | ....but that changes.The magnetic force of family drew Lillian and Jim from the distant Northwest wilderness back into the Heartland, with firstborn in hand...

29: Summer 1954 Lillian had one child and wondered where the halcyon days had gone...

30: The Lakewood, Ohio Years

36: Despite a growing family, Jim and Mike did manage to get out now and then...

37: Trips East

40: Despite her large and demanding brood (including husband),Mike managed to find time to volunteer

42: Jim's Canadian Fishing Expeditions

44: Jon with the all time largest Pampush family pike -- caught on his first casts on his first trip -- while his older brothers worked to set up the camp.

46: ""No Dogs!! No Cats!"....but..

47: ...snakes, lizards, turtles, caimans, mice, rats, frogs and toads and even a rooster were OK....the neighborhood mothers didn't understand....

48: Life at 19858 Sharon Drive

50: The Surgeon General would not approve....

52: Holiday celebration --Jim applies tinsel -- note the dreaded cranberry and popcorn strings..

55: Disruption circa 1967-- the neighborhood is condemned by the federal government and all, including the Pampushes must move away.....

56: ...and thus begins 2828 Kingsbury Drive life...

57: Rule No.1 at extended family gatherings: Do not execute a soliloquy on politics or religion...

60: A hostess must be like the duck.....calm and unruffled on the surface,..and paddling like hell underneath.... --Anon.

65: Very tolerant of her boys' adventures with animals, Mike meanwhile maintained a sort of detente with the animal kingdom...

66: James Joseph Pampush 1922-1982

67: Mike's world was forever changed with Jim's death in 1982. She lost her husband and companion; her boys lost their father. But Mike's core shown through as she raised two young sons still at home, became again accredited in nursing and restarted her career. And while enduring a loss only a fellow sufferer can know, she started a new life and has thrived ever since - and inspired her boys and those who know her...

68: Somehow, all of your sons made it through high school and college and beyond....And then women began to flow into your family -- daughters in law....

75: Boys fledging and Jim's death released the pent up desire to travel...and her intellectual curiosity has taken her many places.....
