FC: Loving Expressions

1: To Jenny, John, and Julie

2: Having little ones was fun, and we loved being parents. I loved sneaking love notes on your doors, on pillows, inside your lunch boxes. I know gift wrapping your sandwiches was a bit crazy,—but these were all expressions of love for you and the joy I experienced being your mom. How touching it was when loving expressions were then delivered to us on our pillows, and into our hands and hearts. This book is a celebration of those sweet expressions—the things you drew or wrote so long ago. | I started saving them when each of you discovered how to hold a pencil or crayon, and when you first began to express yourself by drawing or writing. You'd sound out the words and try to spell things. Adorable. I appreciated and marveled (then and now) at your sweet expressions. I loved watching you learn and grow. Those times are still vivid and your expressions still melt my heart and touch me in a special way. | Most of the time when you handed something to me, I would take the time to have you explain your picture to me, then I would say something like, Great Job.!It would be posted to the refrigerator so all the family could enjoy your work. While in the kitchen, I'’d gaze over at the cute pictures depicting home and family, nature, or the world around you; or just silly stuff. And of course I didn't want to throw any of them away. So the notes and pictures went into a binder for safe keeping. Over the years each time I look at them, I was transported back to the times when you were all very young. | Preface

3: You were all so cute and sweet, and full of love for the most part and you loved exploring and discovering the world we live in. I can remember how each new discovery was filled with wonder and excitement—whether it was watching the different shapes of clouds in the sky or playing in the backyard in the dirt of the unfinished yard. I marveled when you announced that you were big because you got dressed all by yourself. I would smile as you acted out your interpretation of what mommies and daddies would say or do. I loved every moment of your giggling with pure joy over simple things. | These were the days that were filled with hugs, loves, songs, and stories, nature walks, lots of questions, as well as some tears,—some frustrations, and unrealized wants;—and some tantrums, too,—but not very many. Now the years have passed by all too quickly and you all have children of your own. And they are going through or have already gone through the stage of life you were in when you wrote and drew these treasured notes. | In 2011, I had your Dad get the binders down and we thumbed through that binders reading, giggling, and in awe of the pureness in which you wrote or drew them. We both treasure our moments with you and still do.! Henry Ward Beecher said: "Children are the hands by which we take hold of heaven." And it's true. Children are quick to love and quick to forgive. Your expressions will be forever be written on our hearts. Love you forever and always, Mom November 2011

20: On my birthday Jenny and Johnny surprised me with a special birthday wish, signed by all the neighbor kids. And I still have it.

33: You put together a SpecialValentine surprise waiting for us after Dad and I returned from a date. We thought that at last you were old enough to babysit yourselves. A candle lit the dark kitchen and the house was quiet, but once inside you come running and yelling, Surprise.""! Your recorded song, the decorated table, the poster size greeting card with a heart made from red toothpaste and loving expressions to Dad and I.
