FC: A Family History | "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow." | Mary and Nick

1: When my mother passed away in 2007 and we were cleaning her home, all of her old photos fell into my keeping. They have sat in a box in my basement for almost 5 years. What to do with them? Thank goodness, about 25 years ago, I had sat down with mom and looked over most of the old photos and she had identified the who and the when as best she could and I had labelled many of the photos. With the making of this book, I have attempted to organize our family history through photos. This is essentially a photo story of Mary Odynski and Nick Philipchuk. Part One shows their lives before 1937. Photos of growing up and photos of family. Unfortunately, there are very few photos of Nick and his family. Part Two shows their marriage, their children, their grandchildren and their great-grandchildren from 1937 (when they married) to the present. | Finally, Part Three displays a few photos of extended family throughout the years - aunts, uncles, cousins. I have tried my best to label photos with dates and names but there are bound to be errors- apologies in advance! Also, the majority of these photos have come from my mom's collection and mine - so they are limited - apologies if anyone feels that they are left out! But, special thanks to brother Jerry and cousin Bill Myskiw for providing a few extra photos to round out the story. | There is really no beginning and no end to family. Family is an ever-changing dynamic. The "memories" throughout the book are mine and I hope that this book just serves to capture one moment in time of our family. I hope you enjoy it. Jill Philipchuk 2011

17: Nick's mother and father were born in Austria and married in 1883. They came to Canada in 1898. | This appears to be a wedding photo of the Philipchuk family 1917 The Bride is Pearl Philipchuk. To her left is her sister Helen Philipchuk. To her right is her new husband Mike Babiuk and then John Philipchuk (with hat on, her brother and the oldest of the Philipchuk children), At the back (with no hat and a mustache) is her father, Wasyl Philipchuk and standing to his left his her stepmother. Katrina - the mother of the Nick and his siblings (Katrina) died in 1913 and Wasyl re-married. The woman in the middle of the photo, just behind the groom, is another sister, Mary Philipchuk and also in the back room holding a baby is brother George Philipchuk. Others in the photo are unidentified. Some could be family members of the groom and other members of the Philipchuk family. And who are the children in the front row? Nick would have been 8 years old at the time - perhaps he is the boy in the front with the soldier hat? | WASYL PHILIPCHUK 1859 -1932

I thought I was so "cool" hanging out with the older girls! | Karen marries Ron Nekolaichuk in 1972 | their son, Colin

72: Rodney and Dawna married in 1971 | Marcus, Karen, Nick (Myskiw), Sophie Kay, Baba Mary c. 1980 | I remember, in the 50s and 60s, almost every summer our family would pile into our car and drive to Alberta to visit the relatives. We would spend most of our time in Two Hills, Bonnyville and later in Edmonton. There would also be visits to the Philipchuk side of the family. I remember an awesome trip to a pig farm one time but I don't remember which auntie or uncle or cousin it was. However, as we have grown older, the visits have been few and far between. With the passing of mom and dad, we have almost lost track of the "Alberta side" of the family. But the memories remain and our family continues - changing, growing and adapting.

73: 2011 - Where are they now? Jill and Ray retired from education in 2010 and spend their time divided between Vancouver, Belize, their cabin in the Cariboo and on tropical holidays. Jerry keeps talking about retiring, maybe soon! He and Karen live in South Surrey and enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren. Janet lives quietly in Richmond near Nikki and stays in contact with her grandchildren who live in Prince George.
