FC: Beach Dreams by Teresa Joy ScarperiaSmyth
I was raised in a crazy Italian-American family on Schenck Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, with my sister Marie.
What made us crazy? Well... Aunt Rosie cheated at cards, Aunt Angie never stopped eating or talking, Mommy would put paper towels in her hair to keep her curls in place, and we all lived together in one house! | Great Aunt Tessy - She was bald | Cousin Marvin - He tried to make it in the movies, but it didn't work out... | Aunt Angie | Aunt Rosie | Francis, also known as Ma or Mommy | That's me - Teresa Joy Scarperia | That's my sister Marie - we loved to dance together.
Even though I loved my crazy family, I dreamed of being a flight attendant and traveling throughout the United States. | But my father was very strict. When I told him my dream, he shouted- "NO DAUGHTER OF MINE WILL BE A WAITRESS IN THE SKY!!!!" | My 8th grade graduation | My Dad and I outside of our house on SchencK Avenue
But I never gave up on my dream of traveling... And I found new dreams to pursue...
When I was in high school, I saw Jimmy playing basketball in the park. I was impressed with his jump-shot.
One day at the park, Jimmy put his hand in mine and said "Will you be my girl?" Of course, I said Yes. | High School Prom - St. John's Prep
I still dreamed of traveling, but now I wanted to travel with Jimmy...
I had to wait to marry Jimmy because he was called to serve our country. But he wrote to me everyday and I waited by the mailbox for each letter to arrive. | Jimmy in Vietnam
The day finally came when Jimmy came home from Vietnam! We got married a week later and everyone came to celebrate!
Jimmy's parents - Kathleen and Jimmy Smyth | My mother - Francis Scarperia. | My sister Marie was my Maid-of-Honor | By now my Dad in heaven was watching this dream come true.
It was a wonderful winter day on December 18th, 1972!
Jimmy and I were so happy! I started my teaching career. And we traveled to different cities across the United States.
Before long we started a family with our two beautiful children - Amy & Jamie. And my dream of living by the beach came true when we moved to Long Beach, NY!
Just when I thought my life could not become any richer, Kelly was born - 11 years after Jamie! She completed our family and brought even more joy into my life. All my dreams came true! | Kelly is in there!
I watched all of my children grow up... Amy is my oldest, and she is smart, funny, and independent. We loved talking politics and going to the beach together when she'd visit from Wisconsin.
Jamie is wonderful husband to Oakley and the father of three beautiful children, James, Jude, and Frances.
Kelly, my baby, is outspoken, witty, and beautiful.
And I watched my sister Marie's children grow up to be dynamic adults.
I will always be with you as you fulfill your dreams.
