11: In 1948, Helen Marie Barajas, the 16-year old Ruidoso beauty, would have been 'Rodeo Queen', but the bar she was representing, Central Bar & Grill, was raided by the State Police, (in fact, they had the whole town surrounded) for unlicensed gambling. In Helen's words, I lost because the State Police raided the whole town of Ruidoso. Everyone had slot machines. I was working behind the soda fountain, somebody'd get a notice and they'd holler out and the guys would scramble to get the slot machines down to the cellar. But the whole town was raided."
