9: The Fox Family

10: My dad, Gale Olaf Trowbridge, was born in 1905 on a farm near Camden, Michigan, south and west of Hillsdale, and near the Michigan/Indiana line. His father was Heman Trowbridge, his mother was Emily Ann Foster Trowbridge. He had an older brother, Glenn, born 1901, and a younger brother, Merl, born 1911. (Pat has a diary kept by our Grandma Trowbridge; amazing to see what she accomplished every day, and had time to visit sick neighbors.) Emily Trowbridge died in 1922 (age 44), of what was called "female complaint." Heman remarried a woman with several children, who had no interest in Gale and Merl. Merl, about 10-11 years old at the time, moved in with Glenn, who was married and independent, and Gale, who was around 15, left home, to live in a hut in the woods, near Mosherville, where he trapped and hunted to feed himself and to finance finishing high school. Heman Trowbridge and his second wife couldn't make it on the farm and when it was lost for taxes, she disappeared from the scene. My grandfather, Heman Trowbridge, worked as a hired man for various farmers, winding up working for Dolly Winfield, the single heiress to lots of farmland near Mosherville, found to contain oil. My maternal Grandmother Christina Baker, raised in the Jonesville/Allen area, recalled Dolly as a girl coming to church and community outings in a fancy horse "trap" always wearing white kid gloves. Dolly's Mosherville farm had no running water or electricity. It was lit with kerosene lamps; an outhouse was behind the house, with Sears Roebuck catalogavailable. Farm work was done with wonderful huge horses - my sister and I were privileged to catch a short ride, as they were very gentle. Heman ran the farm and maple sugar operation until he became ill with cancer and died in 1947, Jackson Hospital, age 72. | " | Story of Gale Olaf trowbridge

11: Pat and I remember fondly visits to Dolly's place, especially in early spring maple season, when Grandpa Trowbridge ran the sugar bush, collecting, heating to condense the sugar. Grandpa would give us a small dish of "syrup" when it was just right, and if you stirred and stirred it, it would turn to maple sugar. We were confused about who Dolly was if she wasn't a grandma. One of us went into the "parlor" which was verboten, and knocked the Winfield family bible, a huge old tome, off the pedestal and on the floor, pages flying in every direction. Our mom came running in and shoveled it back together. We never heard further of it, so it must have worked. High school finished, Gale kicked around at various jobs, completely on his own. At one time he was a Michigan Gold Gloves boxing champ, and spent several years working on Great Lakes freighters. He taught himself trigonometry. His brother Glenn had become an oil company wholesaler in the Jackson area, and Gale joined him as an oil truck driver. There was a dance hall upstairs over an old building in Pulaski, and that's where my dad met my mother, Marjorie Christine Baker, from Jonesville. Dad didn't want children as he had seen having children could be risky business, but they had two children anyway. I've always thought while it was tough to be his daughter, being a son would have been impossible, so it was fortunate he had girls. | " | - Interview with marilynn trowbridge fox (Grandma)
