2: Parents | The name of Russell is said to mean "red haired" or "red-complexioned" and was probably named after the original bearer because of his appearance. According to family historians the name was originally French and went into England in 1066. We do not know where the exact immigrant Russell came from, but we do know that the first permanent settlers in what is now Tennessee came mainly from Virginia. Moses Fisk, the earliest historian, says that from interviews with the first settlers that the Creeks were quite willing to allow the trespassers to remain, "provided they would make no further encroachments." Fisk is the authority for the information that James Robertson negotiated the lease for the Wataugans by which they became "tenants at will" of Indian landlords (History of Tennessee-Folmsbee, Vol. I, p. 107) Major William Russell of Russellville, Alabama, gained fame at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in the War of 1812, and is mentioned many times in the histories of this battle. In a letter written by William Russell on 1 Oct 1820 from Alabama to the Treasury Department asking pay for his horse while in the military service of the United States, he says, "I was a captain of Mounted Spies in the Creek War under the command of Major General Andrew Jackson from 4 Oct 1813 to 4 April 1814. The latter service from 28 Sept 1814 to 27 March 1815. I was a Major, commanded a Battalion and marched with my Battalion on the Escumbia route. "As stated, I received from Robert Searcy, paymaster, the hire of one horse in my two accounts. You will see a nephew of mine as a Captain in the same service and time attached to my Battalion of the same name." (Borrowed from Billie Barrett Russell, Twelve Generations. )
3: General Jackson made a call on Tennessee and Georgia for more forces; and knowing that the Russells were brave, skillful and well acquainted with Indian warfare, he wrote to old William Russell "to raise a company of men to act as spies, and join him on his march." "A large part of what is now Alabama was taken from the Creek Indians after the war and remained uninhabited wilderness for awhile. In 1816, the Russells, a family from Tennessee, who had been a distinguished part in that war, moved over and settled south of the Tennessee River in what is known as" Russell's Valley." (Republican Paper-Jacksonville, Ala. vol. II, no.12) After the War of 1812 Major Russell with his family and friends moved to the Alabama Territory in what is now Franklin County, Alabama. We think he was born in North Carolina and died near Newburg, Alabama, 25 March 1825. | 2Thess. 2:15 Therefore, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold on to the tradions that we taught you, whether by speech or by letter. | Russell

13: Looking out over Lake Texoma towards Flowing Wells. Standing on this hill was the "Old Russell home place" WJSims and Julia Russell lived here with their children. This concrete slab was once the foundation for the well pump that was on the back of the house where Grandma Russell would pump the water for the day. In the 1940's they built the Denison Dam and all the land around was later inundated with water. The Russell's owned several hundred acres and WJSims sold it because he did not want lakeside property. Halfway across the lake there was a pecan grove and the German prisoners that were working on the dam cut down all of the pecan trees. The Russell's had their own "flowing well"that is now covered by the lake. They had one, son Beecher, that drowned while riding his horse across the creek at the flowing well. | Corine Shires Russell & Bess Shires bathing at the Flowing Well
