S: Max and Jake's Excellent Adventure

FC: Max and Jake's Excellent Adventure | by GrammaSusie December 2011

GrammaSusie had always wanted to take a long overnight train ride ... and doing it with someone you love is especially nice! Aunt Wendy suggested that she come along and we take Max and Jake because 5 and 6 year old boys would LOVE IT, too! So ... we bought the tickets and made our plans to go from Los Angeles to New Orleans in 48 hours on the "Sunset Limited"!

First Stop: Travel Town to see the old trains before we go to board the train.

The Amtrak's "Sunset Limited" -- our train "home" for the next two days! | Max's family saying "Bon Voyage" at the Union Station in Los Angeles

First Things First: Pick out bunks! Jake and Max did "rock-paper-scissors" to help decide: Max got the top bunk for the first night and then persuaded Jake that he'd really like the bottom bunk better because it had a "safety escape window" ... So Max had the top bunk both nights!

Then we explored the train. We found the Dining Car and figured out how to punch the handle so the door would open, then step across the wiggly floor between the train cars so we could punch the next door. It didn't take long for the boys to be expert door-openers!

Our train journey begins ... with supper and menus!

Mealtimes were always fun... morning, noon, and night! | Especially with flowers!

 However, boys will be boys!

Mr. Smith was the Conductor. He makes all the important decisions about the train and keeps it on time. | Eva was our Sleeping Car Attendant. She made our seats into beds at night. | In the morning, she made them back into seats again!

Eddie was the Engineer. He drives the train. His shift is 4 hours east - then he gets on another train and drives 4 hours west ... then he goes home. | Max wanted to get a closer look and pretend he worked on the train, too!

In the Observation Car, it was fun to play with the projects that GrammaSusie brought!

Aunt Wendy brought a big train book. We played "Monopoly" on GrammaSusie's phone, too!

The Travelers: Aunt Wendy GrammaSusie Max Jake

California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana passed our windows - whether we were asleep or awake!

All too soon it was our last night to sleep in our bunk beds in the Sleeping Car. GrammaSusie had made special train pillowcases, so we have a memento of our trip.

Our train trip complete, we packed our clothes, toys, pillows, and memories.

Max spent a few more days visiting at Jake's house in Baton Rouge. Elise, Elliana, and Jake took Max to see Mike, the LSU tiger. Then, Max and GrammaSusie flew back to California where the great train adventure had started!

The End Presented with Love to Max and Jake March 2012 | Thanks for the memories! --GrammaSusie
