7: I decided to do my visual essay on “Teen Pregnancy in Today’s Society” because I think this a social problem that is prevalent in today’s society. I moved to this country when I was ten years old. I was shocked to find out young boys and girls have boyfriends and girlfriends. I was really surprised to see really young girls, pregnant. I did not know the severity of this problem until I got to middle school when the teachers provided the students with sex education. I was raised in a society where life went from studying, school, college, degree, marriage then children. Since it has been twelve years I have lived in the United States, I have eased my mind in thinking having boyfriends and girlfriends is okay but I feel like there is a limit where what is okay when it comes to relationships and what is not okay, which eventually in my opinion, leads to teenage pregnancy. The first picture I chose for this essay is photo of a teenage couple. The reason I chose this picture is because I feel like teen pregnancy starts with relationships such as having a boyfriend or a girlfriend. According to the functionalist perspective, a family serves as a child's primary group. This primary group is what the child first claims before anything (Leon-Guerrero). Therefore, I feel like children should be educated at an early age about school, college and life later on. The next picture I chose was a teenage girl finding out about her pregnancy. I chose this because I feel like there is free access to birth contraceptives, pregnancy tests available to teens therefore, encouraging them to use this freely. I feel like there should be some restriction placed on these items to be used because if they are bought from a health clinic or planned parenthood, teens have counseling and better preparing about their life ahead. The next picture I chose because this is of a pregnant teen that looks sad and depressed. This picture broke my heart because I can only imagine what she is going through because of this pregnancy. Instances such as the father of the child could no longer be in the picture, the baby's future, the mother's health. In all this, in my opinion, I think the government should slowly stop aiding free insurance to young mothers because maybe if it is slowly done, pregnancy rates may decrease. I thoughts on this issue is that I feel like the teens think it is okay to become pregnant because the government will pay for self and the child. I realize this is not the circumstance in all cases but something must be done to reduce and decrease teenage pregnancies. Another issue that bothers me on this social problem is that media is encouraging this type of behaviors. The shows such as “16 and pregnant” are stories of pregnant teens and their lives. I feel like showing this type of behavior through the media is carelessness because the message goes out to teens around the world that it is okay to become pregnant. I realize this is a social problem in our society that will be difficult to reduce but my goal is to educate boys and girls all around to think about everything before they make their decision. I think the government should weigh in on this problem in a way that they can stop giving out free insurances to pregnant teenagers. This paper is all based on my opinion and if anyone is offended by this, I apologize.
