FC: The Wonderful Fantastical Story of Kailyn's Hope Chest August - September 2011
So I have this daughter. And she's my only daughter. And she was going to be 18. Which means she would soon be on her own in the big, wide world. And I wanted her to be prepared. So what could I do to help her prepare to be on her own? I pondered and thought and pondered and thought about this question for months.
I wanted her to be healthy and happy. I had started to help her brothers to eat healthier by adding more fruits and vegetables to their dinner and snack menus. I had also started collecting healthy recipes for treats for our family home evenings.
 My Lovely Daughter
I thought also that she might need help sometime with common household questions. Questions like how to hard boil eggs, bake potatoes, cook spaghetti, choose ripe fruit. How to get rid of ants. But she didn't live with me. So I couldn't just show and teach her things I thought she should know. | My first thought was that I could make her a single-father's college student survival guide filled with my favorite recipes given to me by my mother and my easy but healthy recipes for sneaking | Beautiful Smile
Kailyn's BirthdayParty & Hope Chest | vegetables into our meals, and tips for living on your own and making healthy choices.
Then I thought, "She will need tools to make and eat the food in the recipes." Tools like a measuring cup, blender, utensils, dishes, cooking sheets, pots & pans, pot holders.
A Hope Chest! | Nick Mainville | Nick Mainville
She would need something to store them in! | Something to keep forever
A hope chest seemed the perfect solution for Kailyn's birthday gift! I could fill it with her birthday gifts, things she would need when she lived on her own. | Nick Mainville
Nick had built furniture before and he agreed to help me build Kailyn's hope chest. | Nick Mainville was one of the work release techs we hired at the tire store.
Since Nick had built furniture before, he built Kailyn's hope chest, while I helped when and how I could. | My real contribution to the project was its design, its size, shape, style & color.
Most of the wood was purchased at Sutherland's on MacArthur, but the lid uses wood taken from the building torn down across the street from the tire store. The building was an adult video store first, then a used car lot, before it was demolished. | Notes
Notes | The sides are oak, like that used in oak cabinets. The rest of the wood is white pine. The trim pieces were cut from 8 ft. boards.
Stephen helped me cut Kailyn's name on the lid. The router, which belonged to Uncle Stan, was old, older than Kailyn. The plastic fins that blew the sawdust away from the work surface broke off one at a time. With the shop's air pistol, Stephen kept the cutting surface clean for me so I could see the shapes being cut.
Kailyn's hope chest was built to exactly fit into the back of the company-owned 2001 Ford Escape I drove so I could deliver it to her.
The hardware is antiqued. The lid is anchored by white clothesline. Carpeted furniture glides make the hope chest safe for all floors.
I filled Kailyn's hope chest with things she would need when she is on her own: blender, Pyrex® dishes, apple slicer, pizza cutter, dishware, flatware, pizza pan, cake pan, Zyliss® ice cream scoop, knife set, cutting board, toaster & more.
Wishing Kailyn everything happy for her birthday and her future. | The only item missing from Kailyn's hope chest was The Single-Father's College Student Survival Guide. | WE YOU
