FC: Happy Holidays Christmas vacation 2010 Brian Head Cabin | Happy Holidays! Winter Vacation 2010 Brian Head Cabin

We decided to try something completely different for our family vacation this year. Instead of the usual cruise or Disneyland adventure, we rented a cabin near the Brian Head ski resort. We packed our bags with warm boots, hats, gloves and jackets, as well as loads of food, and set out for our winter vacation! | As usual, we got off to a late start, but only by an hour - we girls were shopping for food and fuzzy pants. The drive was uneventful, possibly even boring. As we turned onto the road to Brian Head, a sign warned us to put chains on our tires, but as the road was dry, we ignored it. Which was fine until we got to Fir Street, where our cabin was. Craig tried to drive up the snow-packed hill, but got less than twenty yards in before we realized we weren't going to make it. He backed out and we drove to the parking lot of a little grocery store nearby to put the chains on the tires. Although Brett and Chelsea managed without chains, our trials weren't over yet. The lockbox code we'd been given didn't work, so several more minutes in the biting cold before working it out and getting out of the cold...

Our cabin was awesome! Four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a hot tub, fireplace, nicely appointed kitchen, family rooms, tv's, pool table, loft, balconies, movies, and games | Cozy!

Getting set up: first to haul everything up lots of stairs: suitcases, five coolers and five big boxes of food. Brett immediately assumed his role of Grand Fire Master. | Seriously Mom, are you sure we'll need all this stuff?!?! | Check out our Fabulous aprons, courtesy of Elise and her sewing machine!

Brett, Jenna, Elise, Alexa, Spencer and Jennifer took a beginner ski class. Chelsea, already an accomplished ski diva, went out on her own. Jacob spent the day learning to ski with kids his age. Craig stayed at the cabin with Bryce, who needs to potty train before he tries on skis. | Learn to ski day! | Since we only had chains on the van, we all piled in the back. Tight fit, but a little warmer?

Before you can hit the black diamond, you have to hit the bunny hill. Before you hit the bunny hill, you have to learn to turn. Before you learn to turn, you have to learn to slow down and stop. Before you learn to stop, you have to learn the pizza slice. and before you learn about pizza, you have to learn how to put on your skis and walk like a pigeon-toed duck :)

z | Finally, after practicing our pizza walk, Jason let us slide down the baby hill, one by one. These pictures make it look like there wasn't much of a slope, but don't let the photos fool you. | This poor lady couldn't slow down, and leaned too far back, and ended up sliding under the instructor! | Uh, Brett, he said "pizza", not french fries! | Hey, I'm a skier! I ski! | I'm an ambi-turner!

After a quick lunch of burgers and fries, we graduated to the bunny slope and the ski lift. To keep us from getting tangled in each other's skis, Jason only let us go on the lift one at a time. | Alexa, Elise, Jennifer, Jason, Brett, Jenna and Ben | Look who we ran into at the ski lift! | Jenna pulled a "Paco" on Jason | Where have I seen this silly smile before? Oh, I know, on Bryce when you tell him to smile!

z | Jason finally had enough confidence to let us take the lift in pairs. Of course, Brett and Jenna got tangled getting off, and a few minutes later, Spencer, a little out of control, came up behind Jenna and grabbed on, startling her, so they both headed down the hill, saved from a big fall by our hero, Jason. By the last run of the day, a few of us were able to do a little slalom thing. A very cool and happy day!

And snow it did! We woke up to over a foot of new snow on our tubing day, with plenty more coming down, and lots of wind to blow it into drifts. The two cars were nearly buried, and it took some time for Craig to dig the van out enough to drive.

In spite of the blizzard, we went ahead with our tubing plans. With only the van accessible, we all bundled up and piled in. Chelsea and Jacob squeezed into the trunk.

The blizzard raged, but the bravest of us kept making our way back to the lift. Seriously, in spite of the cold, it was a pretty easy gig: let the guy hook your tube to the lift, ride it up, fall off at the appropriate spot, and get ready to slide! | Oops Spence, did you forget your hat? | Bryce fell asleep as soon as he was put into a tube and pulled around. We brought him into the warm shack, but he woke up soon and spent the rest of the time in the lodge with adults who were only too happy to get in out of the cold

All was not frigid. The hot tub was deliciously warm, especially after a few hours in the snow. Favorite activities were: the "I've never" game. Auote: "I've never peed in this hot tub!" | Bryce especially loved the hot tub. His favorite games were: get tossed in the air, jump in and trust someone will catch you, play with the broken-glass-thingy, and get squirted with the spray bottle

 Hot tubbin'

Fun & Games...! | While snowbound, we kept entertained with a little game-time. Bumper pool, Quirkle and Boggle, and a little late night Trivial Pursuit. Elise was the grand master of Boggle, although Brett might (definitely would) tell you otherwise. | Even Bryce got into Quirkle. If you can call trying to eat the tiles getting into" it...

...or epic battles between good and evil? | How many quirkles can you find in this picture?

Bryce | Because everyone forgot to bring toys for Bryce, keeping him happy was a fun challenge. Between tv, hot tubbing, tossing him in the air, and letting him do pretty much anything he wanted, we were all happy | Bryce

Jammies, 24/7, were the clothing of choice for all of us, but Bryce had the cutest and best variety. With feet. And those Toy Story slippers? Da BOMB! | Fun times!

Time to relax! Watch some movies and make pretty things!

z | One of the advantages of a cruise is that all the cooking is done for you, as well as the cleanup. At the cabin, all the food preparation was up to us, but all the girls (and Brett) contributed, so it was never a burden. And the food, in my humble opinion, was as good as cruise food! (Next cruise, I'm ordering biscuits and gravy) The culminating food event was New Years Eve, when each of the girls made at least one hors d'oeuvres. Beautiful food and good eating. If only we hadn't just eaten so much of Elise's fantastic veggie enchiladas.

On Friday, with the thermometer hovering around 0 degrees, a few of us braved the ski slopes one more time. Brett and Chelsea went out first, and hit some runs that were probably above Brett's "I've been skiing one day" level. For fun, Chelsea plowed into a snow bank and lost the ski pass, which she and Brett had to replace. Elise and Mom went out next, using their passes and skis, and braved the longer bunny hill. Neither met the goal of making it down without falling at all, but did get close. The highlight of the adventure was when Mom skied into the powder on the side, and couldn't get up. When Elise tried to help, she got pulled down into the snow as well. Even harder to get up when both were laughing so hard they cried,. In the cold, the tears froze on cheeks and eyelashes. Surely the people on the lift overhead got a good laugh. | The view from the lift was gorgeous, including a rainbow at the top of the hill. | In spite of being completely bundled, it was hard to deal with the incredible cold. The ride up the lift seemed to take forever...

Finally, it was time to pack up and head out. But first, Craig had to find the coolers which we'd set out on the deck for safe keeping. Needless to say, it was a major undertaking, from dressing for the occasion, to thawing the door, to finding coolers when the snow was deeper than they were. | Digging out | And, chains were a necessity, of course. Would have been nice if the temperature was above the zero mark.

b | A Night at the Museum | Treats at Iceberg afterward. And a little daredevil bit on the handrail, of course :o)

Before they went back to New York, Jenna and Bryce went to the Dinosaur Museum at Thanksgiving Point with Elise, Craig and Jennifer.
