S: Other Body Modifications 2003-2011

Welcome to John Johnson's portfolio for his work in "other" body modifications from 2003-2011. Here you'll find images of play piercing, scarification, keloid removal, ear cutting, skin removal, suspension, hook pulling, tongue splitting, corset piercing, and genital bead implants. If these types of pictures may offend you, please don't continue. We welcome your questions but ask you to keep any negative comments to yourself.

These two pictures of John Johnson are from the first studio John ever worked at, Indianapolis, Indiana. Chris Johnson, from Obscurities, (Dallas, TX), can be seen on the right.

John is in the bottom right of this picture. These two pictures were taken at a party in Las Vegas. Each person seen is a piercer. | Taken in 2001. these pictures were featured in a Japanese magazine.

John Lopez from Carl Hanes Tattoo (Eureka, California) helps John Johnson install his first hook into the back of Kent Fazekas. San Diego, 2000.

Play piercing is done by different people for different reasons. Some just think it's fun.

John hosts an astronomy podcast called Guerilla Astronomy and co-hosts The Bod Mod Show with Brett Perkins from Anomaly, Pasadena, CA.

John Johnson, Brett Perkins (Anomaly), and LA artist Chantal Menard helping suspend their clients. 2005.

Corset projects are popular for their artistic value, but not intended for long term wear. Most clients will wear the rings only long enough to take some great pictures.

 John's 2008 Christmas Card.

John using a dermal punch to install a surface barbell. Not a very common technique today.

John and Brett install spears in this man carrying a kavadi for Pasadena's Doo Dah parade, 2004.

Many clients describe the sensation of scarification as being similar to a tattoo.

This client wore large rings in her ears that resulted in unwanted scarring. The process of removing this one was very easy and the scar never returned.

This suspension/camping event was on Catalina Island, 2008. | Suspension: The act of suspending a human body from hooks that have been put through body piercings. These piercings are temporary and are performed just prior to the actual suspension.

These symbols are important to the client who chose to have them placed on her body through scarification rather than tattooing.

Similar to a simple tattoo, the design is made from the client's own skin without any ink.

 This scarification features skin removal.

John Johnson did cutting, play piercing, and installed hooks for the band Desillusion (Seattle) for a photoshoot.

Most clients will stretch their ear lobe piercings to larger sizes over time, sometimes months or years. | This technique is performed using a scalpel.

By making small incisions or removing part of the lobe we can install much larger jewelry faster. | This client will need plastic surgery to reverse this process.

Piercers refer to the installation of hooks as "throwing hooks." In these pictures John throws hooks in San Diego with Roger "Rabbit" Rodriguez from Prix (Hollywood.)

This event is the annual Southern California BME BBQ. (

At this annual event in San Diego, participants do a hook pull, pulling against one another. This picture is of piercer Chris Kane, Above All Tattoo (Fullerton, CA.)

This client is wearing five silicon bead implants. Genital beading has long been used for sexual enhancement. The use of implant grade silicon has made this procedure easy to perform, easy to heal, comfortable to wear, and perfect for intercourse.

Silicon implants come in several different sizes and styles for different parts of the body and a wide range of images. For male genitals,, beads are the only practical design.

These are before and after pictures of a client who chose to have his ears cut to a larger size than he was already wearing.

On the left, John marks his client just as he would for a piercing. On the right, John begins to work on the second ear.

Tongue splitting is an intense experience that only a few are looking for.

Once healed, the client can move each tongue muscle individually.

John preps this client for his tongue splitting.

Scarification John did with Steve Joyner. Above image is after four years.

Thank you for looking. Let us know if you have any questions.
