Early in 2008 we went to Hawaii with Ryan's family. We started out staying with them for a week on Kauai. While there we spent our time snorkeling, diving, hiking, seeing waterfalls and other sights, swimming, playing games, and enjoying local treats (shave ice and chocolate-covered macadamia nuts!).
We Spent one of our Kauai days at Waimea Canyon State Park - the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. | We hiked out to see some waterfalls, stopped at scenic overlooks, and came to better understand what it means for a hen to gather in her chicks.
We spent an entire day hiking the Na Pali Coast - and we loved it!
We followed up our week on Kauai with a week on Maui. Heather spent the first few days with us. Big Beach was our favorite beach, and the Ioa Valley was lovely.
Less popular than eastern Maui we still really loved West Maui - although the curviness of the roads and the speediness of the other drivers along the cliffs was a little intense.
After Heather left us we went scuba diving - which was fun but we ruined our camera during it so were unable to take pictures of the rest of our trip. We also drove Road to Hana, hiked Haleakala, drove to a red wood forest, and did some snorkeling at really cool tide pools!
May was a busy month. Ryan's mom graduated from TCC after working diligently for several years. Amanda completed a year of teaching Old Testament in Early Morning Seminary. AND Amanda graduated from Baylor University with her Ph.D. in neuroscience. Ryan threw a graduation party so our family and friends could celebrate!
In June we went on a two-week adventure to Alaska - one week cruise, one week on land. Our cruise departed from Vancouver so to be certain we wouldn't miss it we spent one fantastic day there. | Our flight there took us through Toronto where we had a lay-over just long enough for Amanda's MTC companion to visit us.
Although our favorite parts of our cruise were while we were on land and in Glacier Bay we did have fun just being on the boat - the Zaandam. The food was fantastic and they had several fun dinners for us, and we enjoyed just watching the scenery.
We had stops at Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. At each stop we spent the majority of our time hiking - which was a ton of fun but ended up making our feet sore!
While in Juneau we took a bus to Mendenhall Glacier and hiked around, which we enjoyed quite a bit. We also went to a salmon hatchery and to the Alaska State Capitol (which was amazingly unimpressive).
Glacier Bay, on the other hand, was amazingly IMPRESSIVE!
 College Fjord was also fantastic!
Our cruise ended in Seward and we began our week on land with Heather. We spent the day at Exit Glacier and watching sea otters play.
We spent a couple days on the Kenai Peninsula. While there we hiked (and a black bear crossed our trail), saw our first Alaskan moose, and enjoyed bald eagles in Homer.
We spent one rainy day at Portage Glacier and the Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Center, where we saw a black bear high in a tree (as well as a lot of other cool animals.)
On our way to Denali we were super blessed with a clear day and got to see the top of Mt. McKinley - from more than one one view even.
On our way to Denali we were blessed with a super clear day and got to see the top of Mt. McKinley from two different sides.
Seeing all the wildlife at Denali National Park was one of the highlights of our trip.
We spent the last day of our trip doing a session at the Anchorage Temple and learning about Alaskan culture and the Alaskan Native Heritage Center.
We spent the 4th of July at an Earl Family Reunion at the cabin.
In September we got to go to N. California for a work trip. While Ryan worked Amanda played - visiting the capitol building and doing sessions at the Sacramento and Oakland Temples (with Paula Kaye, one of the converts from her mission.) | -
Ryan did get some playing in - we did a night hike in Muir Woods with Molly and Bruce (also there for a work trip), went to breakfast with Jessica,... | and toured the Winchester Mystery Mansion.
In October we became temple workers at the Dallas Temple, attended the BYU vs TCU football game where we met Ty Detmer, harvested a huge crop of tomatoes, celebrated Halloween, and Amanda began her post-doc at the Center for Brain Health.
We had a lot of fun attending a variety of Christmas Season activities this year. | We went to train displays, nativity exhibits, a live nativity village, and more!
Las Vegas got a record amount of snow this year. It was a lot of fun flying in and seeing Las Vegas totally covered in white. | While in Las Vegas we continued our Christmas adventures - visiting decorated gardens, gingerbread villages, watching our nieces and nephews act out the nativity, and celebrating Christmas!
We spent our final days of the year in Flagstaff visiting the Nortons. | Jesse Price made it into the world just in time to be a 2008 baby. Great end to a great year.
