FC: Around the World Trip: 2009

 Leaving Tulsa

Manaus, Brazil We visited the Opera House in Manaus on our first day in Brazil. The next day we were going into the Amazon Jungle. We asked around for things to do in the city and the Opera House was almost the only recommendation.

 Inside the Opera House

 A church in Manaus

 Our Trip into the Amazon

 Ararinha Jungle Lodge

Josh, chilling out at our private jungle hut in the Amazon. | Ahh! A hammock in the rain-forest. | We went on a jungle river tour for five days. We spent the days touring around in a boat with our guide, Matthias. He was very informative and friendly. We also went on several hiking trips into the rain-forest. It was the rainy season, so the river was flooding and there was water everywhere.

We had a lot of adventures in the Amazon: fishing for piranhas and catching caimans being two of them. It was amazing to watch our guide searching for caimans, calling to them and hoping for a small one.

Images of the Amazon | Of note: the black frog on the left is a poison dart frog. We practically walked right into it when we were hiking. It was very small.

Iguanas, Birds, Giant Tortoise Shells and Pink Dolphins

"God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees and flowers and clouds and stars." Martin Luther

 Spear Fishing

 Cannes, France

The first stop of our European cruise was Cannes, France. The home of the annual Cannes Film Festival.

We visited the outside of St. Michael the Archangel Russian Orthodox Church, and walked along the beach.

Nice, France | Josh and I took a train from Cannes to Nice and walked around. There were beautiful fountaines and old buildings.

Florence, Italy | Piazza della Signoria

We visited the Piazza della Signoria first. It is an open air plaza with some of the most famous statues in the world just sitting there. It is home to the Fountain of Neptune, Judith and Holofernes, Hercules and Cacus, Rape of the Sabines, and others.

Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore | Duomo, designed by Brunelleschi, has 493 steps to reach the top. Josh and I climbed up and down each one. It was exhausting. (This page is the baptistry, opposite is the Basilica)

Opposite: The view from the top of Duomo. Above: The ceiling inside Duomo depicting the final judgement.

After that climb our legs were shaking. There was only one solution: gelatto!

Another stop on our cruise was the mighty city of Rome. We started our day at the Vatican. | Rome, Italy

 The Sistine Chapel

It started pouring rain during our day in | Rome, but we still saw Trevi Fountain, and the Colosseum. It is a beautiful and historical | city. We will have to visit again someday.

Pompeii The Roman city that was buried in ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in the year 79.

Malaga, Spain We toured a castle and a fort built by Muslim rulers. There were beautiful gardens and wildflowers, but we didn't care for the food.

Our next cruise stop was Lisbon, home to the second largest aquarium in the world. There were so many fish, sea creatures, birds, and mammals to see, and we enjoyed it thoroughly. Afterwards we rode on the skylift and saw more of Lisbon from the air.

 Oceanario de Lisboa Lisbon, Portugal

We traveled around Europe on the Norwegian Jade for 2 weeks. It was a whirlwind tour! | Spinnaker Lounge | Sailing on the Norwgian Jade

 Normandy Beach, France

Brugge, Belgium This town is a gorgeous, old fashioned town with cute shops, amazing chocolate, canals, and parks. We saw Michelangelo's Madonna, ate chocolate covered waffles, and drank "the world's best" hot chocolate. It was an idilic European town, and I'd love to go back.

Arc de Triumphe in Paris, France We stayed by the arch when we had to stay in Paris an extra 2 days. Josh had to get an emergency passport at the embassy because his was too full to travel on to South Africa.

South Africa We went on a visit to Kruger National Park, a wilderness preserve filled with animals. | Charlotte and Josh posing on Elephant Bridge. | Lora Willard, living with her husband Adam in South Africa as Peace Corps volunteers.

We stayed in a campground area inside the park. The campgrounds were surrounded by electric fences to keep out the preditors that might want to eat us in the night. We saw hyenas pacing the fence at night, and they were frightening. During our visit we saw lots of the best zoo animals, all free and wild. They were amazing, surprising, and sometimes frightening. My favorites were the elephants. We saw them in herds, bathing, fighting, trumpeting, and stomping down trees. It was incredible.

One of the most amazing experiences we had was going on a night safari. We saw hippopotomuses running! During the day they were so slow, they looked like blobs. At night they travel great distances to find food, and we saw first hand how fast they are. That is probably why they are actually one of the most dangerous animals.

 Palace of Versailles

 Paris, France

We visited the Palace of Versailles, the last home of the French royal family before they were murdered in the French Revolution. | It was very elaborate and ornate. There was gold leafing everywhere.

Shanghai, China We came to visit China and Josh's highschool friend, Dawson. He has been living in China for several years and could show us around and talk to people fairly well. The first day we visited Yu Yuan Gardens and the marketplace that surrounds them. There were a lot of people in the markets, and we had to learn to barter.

 China Propoganda Museum

Museum on the site of one of the earliest human settlements found in China.

The Great Mosque: Islamic temple on the site of a Chinese temple. They still had aspects of both.

 Guam

Talofofo Falls | Beach outside of The Hilton Guam Resort: Amazing, awesome snorkeling!

Christchurch, New Zealand | We stayed in the towns of Akaroa and Methvin, driving a great deal around the central area of the South Island. We visited museums, hot springs, & went skiing. New Zealand is a beautiful country.

 Sydney, Australia

In Sydney we visited Darling Harbour, Circular Quay, The Sydney Opera House, the Botanical Gardens, the Governor's House, Hillsong Church, Wildlife World, the Powerhouse Museum, the Sydney Observatory, and we went whale watching!
