4: Jim first dated Connie on January 1, 1960 when Jim's Aunt Lois Clifton suggested he call the Harbach's house for a date, as they had a nice selection of daughters! Connie was lucky enough to answer the phone, and secure the date with Jim. By Valentine's Day, Jim was smitten, and gave Connie a gold heart locket. On the way home from his cousin's wedding rehearsal in July, Jim stopped to retrieve a ring from the glove compartment and asked Connie to marry him. The ring came from Bush's Drug Store and Jim noted that he paid for it over many months. They were married on Saturday, February 11, 1961, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Delaware. Jim received his funeral director and embalmers license on the same day. They honeymooned in Chicago before settling in an apartment above Carton's Grocery Store in Earlville. | 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION James Robert Clifton DOB: 8/19/1938 and Constance Rae Clifton DOB: 7/23/1941 Parents: Francis & Gladys Clifton, Earlville, Iowa Herman & Wilma Harbach, Delhi, Iowa | Phillip James was born to Jim and Connie on May 19, 1967. They followed each other through career and academic transitions that took them to Iowa City, Iowa; Wausau, Wisconsin; Boone, Iowa; and Terre Haute, Indiana. Curt was recently awarded tenure at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where he has taught Computer Science and Software Engineering since 2005. Curt and Lisa are back to nurturing a long-distance relationship, as Lisa has retired from her first career as a family physician and is pursuing a Masters Degree in Biotechnology at Penn State University. They hope to be back under the same roof again in June. | In October 1961, Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Berlin Build-up. After basic training, Connie joined him in Virginia and later in Germany in the summer of 1962, returning home in the fall of 1963. Jim resumed working with his Uncle John in the Clifton Funeral home, which he and Connie purchased on January 1, 1964. Jim didn't think Connie was busy enough with two little boys and the business books of the funeral home, so they established the Clifton Insurance Agency, various rental properties, and a Shaklee business throughout the years. Several additions to the funeral home gradually gave the boys more free reign in their home. Time spent with family and friends has always been a priority for Jim and Connie, as well as being involved in their church and community. Jim and Connie retired from the funeral business in January 2004, having sold the family business to Murdoch Funeral Homes where Jim continues to work part-time. They enjoy entertaining in their new home they built in 2003.
