S: A Different Life
FC: Our Family History
Woken up by a herd of buffalo coming through our village, My name is Chista Lenmama and I am 13. At 13 you have to go through a period of life that only 13 year olds go through. It is to get married.
Getting married for the Native Americans is that I have put my hair up in a certain hairstyle to signal to the 13 year old boy that I am ready to get married. When I meet my match I'll have to move in with him or he will have to move in with my family.
"Chista! Get up, it's time to go pick our food out of the field.", Enola Wauna, said. "This early mom?"Chista said. "Yes,this early girl. Get up", her mom said. Chista got off the hard , muddy, dirty ground, her grandmother, Makewee Keezheekonu, was still asleep. Her Dad, Wachinksapa Yancy, and little brother, Nadic Kokyangwuti, had already went out to catch us some buffalo.
Chista's grandmother was a medicine woman. People would come to her and tell her to get them some medicine or cure them. A man walked in with an open gash on his leg. It looked like it came from hunting. Grandma sewed it up, put a bandage on it, and gave him some pain medicine. As the man walked out the door, grandmother said" Take care". He said with a deep voice, "I will ".
Dad and Nadic crept into the herd of the buffalo, Dad went after one. He drawled back his spear and shot. It guided through the air and hit the buffalo in neck. As Nadic walked up to him he could see the grief in his eyes and a tear rolled down Nadic's face. Dad looked at him and said, “Are You Crying?”. Nadic said, “No”. Dad got the buffalo and walked away without saying a word. Nadic could see the anger and disappointment in dad's face. Nadic said, ”I am sorry. Dad walked in the house with anger as if he didn't hear Nadic.
As my mom and I was walking back from picking food, I saw this handsome young man. He was wearing beads to represent that he is 13 and ready to get married. The young man lived across from me in a tiki. Mom turned around and said,“that's a handsome man you could marry”. I said, “I know mom”.
As the next day came Nadic and I got up and prepared ourselves for school. As we walked I saw the handsome young man from yesterday. He came over there were I was and said, “Hey my name is Huritt Wahanassatta”. “Hi, Huritt”,I said nervously. He said, “Your are beautiful and I think you is the one I want to marry”. I was speechless. I didn't know what to say. He got down on one knee and ask me, “Did I want to marry him?” I said, “.........Yes!.......”
As I arrived on a boat to his home village, my mom told me I looked beautiful. Then my father put a necklace on me that I have to wear to the ceremony. It's called a Zuni man made of silver and turquoise. As I turned around to look at him he started to shed a tear. He said, “I am so happy of you and you look beautiful.” A lot of people brought wedding baskets. They were amazing.
After the wedding and I had moved into his house. I had to grind corn for three days to show that I had good wifely skills.
Nadic was still worried about Dad. So he Went to Dad and ask could he talk to him. Nadic started off saying, “That he was sorry and he knew that he would have to grow up but it was sad. Dad said, “That he accept his apology and that Nadic would have to grow up but it isn't time yet.” Nadic had two more years. He also said, “He over reacted a little bit.” After that everybody lived their Cherokeen lives.
