FC: My Time in Space | Master Chief John-117
Halo: First Strike Eric Nylund Alex Fleming 3rd Hour
From the Beginning | When I began training I was only six years old, but I was also far taller and smarter than other children my age | One of my most significant character traits is an overwhelming drive to win. This perseverance would be invaluable later in my life
My military career began when I was six years old, when I was abducted by the military and put through a brutal training program. | When I was fourteen years old, me and the other children I trained with went through an augmentation procedure that made us faster and stronger, but killed over half of those who underwent it.
Game Changing People | Dr. Halsey was the brainchild of the SPARTAN program that led to my recruitment and training. She was also one of the only people who still thought of me as a person once my training was completed. | Since Dr. Halsey played a integral part of my childhood, she also represents a mother figure to me and my fellow SPARTAN supersoldiers.
Sam was my best friend during training. We fought together for 14 years before he became the first SPARTAN to die in combat. His death helped me realize that sacrifices would have to made to save the galaxy. | Sam also played an important part in the first lesson I learned in training, about how the only way to win is through teamwork. This realization was made me such a good leader in the future.
The Arrival of MJOLNIR | The development of MJOLNIR powered amour provided a key turning point for all SPARTANS. The high tech suits exponentially increased our speed and reflexes, while also making us almost impervious to bullets
A Home Destroyed | The war against the xenophobic alien race known as The Covenant reached it's peak with the destruction of the planet Reach. Reach was a major industrial stronghold and also served as the place where we were trained as children. The total annihilation of the planet served as a major blow to both the human race and represented the destruction of my only home.
A Record of Success | One the day that Dr. Halsey recruited me, we played a game were she flipped a coin and i correctly guessed which side it landed on. This success would later become representative of how i would always win, through a combination of skill and determination.
This jersey represents the importance that i place upon working as a team. Throughout my time in the military I led teams of soldiers who accomplished far more together that they could have separately. This success is one reason that we were able to win the war with the Covenant.
"Sam's death had shown them that the Covenant were not invincible. They could be beaten. At a high cost, however. John finally understood what the Chief had meant- the difference between a life wasted and a life spent. John also knew that humanity had a fighting chance . . . and he was ready to go to war" (Nylund 150)
This passage describes the moment when John finally understood what his mentor the Chief had told him about leadership. He realized that it's not the job of a leader to shelter those under his command, but to ensure that if they made a sacrifice that the price they pay is worth it. John also realizes that the loss of his best friend would not be the only sacrifice that he would have to make to ensure the survival of humanity
