Amias' Community Project - 3rd Grade - Page Text Content

BC: Special thanks to my Aunt, Becky, for all of her help with this project.

FC: by Amias Williams | Community Project

Toys-r-us, Concord, NC For this project I interviewed Kathy. She is the Assistant Manager for Toys-r-us. I interviewed her on April 6. Toys-r-us is a for profit business.

 Hours of Operation

Day Opening Time Closing Time Sunday 10:00 AM 7:00 PM Monday 10:00 AM 9:00 PM Tuesday 10:00 AM 9:00 PM Wednesday 10:00 AM 9:00 PM Thursday 10:00 AM 9:00 PM Friday 9:00 AM 11:00 PM Saturday 9:00 AM 10:00 PM

 www.toysrus.com | Hello, Amias

Toys-r-us has a very colorful, well decorated website. They have Geoffrey’s Birthday Club which you can sign up for to get special gifts from Geoffrey. They have an online gift finder where you can click information about the person you want to buy for like boy or girl, artistic, smart, athletic. Then the website finds a perfect gift for the person. What’s really cool is the Recommended for you. When I logged onto the website and looked at Recommended for You I saw Power Rangers and Legos. How did they know? When I went on my mother’s computer Recommended for You just had random things. How this works is that when you go on their website and look up things you like it remembers what you like and mostly look up. It uses that information and puts it in the Recommended for you because you like those products and maybe you’ll buy them. I decided to test this out. Toys-r-us website did a great job!

 Employees

Toys-r-us has different amounts of employees at different times of the year. When there is no season going on they have about 40 employees. When it’s a season they have 75 to 100 employees. Christmas is a big season because Toys-r-us has many customers so they have to hire more employees. The employees are called Associates. The employees at Toys-r-us are paid. | We sell

 Supplies and Materials Needed

Toys-r-us needs some materials to make their business run. Some of the resources are bags, pens, printers, paper and shopping carts. They need trucks to carry big items that can’t fit in people’s cars.

 Number of Customers

At Toys-r-us lots of people come to shop. There are usually a lot of people on holidays, mostly Christmas. Last week was not a holiday so only 1034 people bought an item. There were a lot more people than 1034 because probably people came in but didn’t buy anything and only 1034 people did. | x | Toys-r-us

The goods that are provided at Toys-r-us are toys, baby clothes, bikes, electronics for kids and games. The store is divided into a lot of sections. A few of those sections are Baby Clothes, Boy Toys, Girl Toys, Action, Games, Bikes and Candy. The services that are provided at Toys-r-us are parties, baby registry and they’ll adjust your bike for free. If you buy a product and it’s too big to fit in your car you can get it delivered to your house for free. | Goods and Services Provided

Why this business is needed in the community Toys-r-us is not needed because there are lots of toys there. People might want toys but they don’t need toys to live. We need food and water. It is still good for the community because lots of people want toys. If Toys-r-us wasn’t there, there would be hardly any toys to buy and play with and enjoy. | Significant Changes The manager said Toys-r-us is changing all the time because toys have higher demand when new toys come out like Lego Ninjago. If there are old products they will put that on lower prices and bring in new products that are popular. Once they see what the demand is they will see if they should put it on sale or give a higher price. | Depends on other business Toys-r-us depends on lots of other businesses because if a good restaurant is around Toys-r-us the kids will be walking with their parents to that restaurant and see Toys-r-us. They will beg their mom to take them. So, they depend on lots of businesses to bring customers to them.

Contributions to education The store in Concord does not do anything to contribute to education, but all the Toys-r-us together does volunteer work and raises money for education and autism. | How long has Toys-r-us been in business The first Toys-r-us began in 1948 about 60 years ago. | Location and Route from Mallard Creek Elementary

The natural BEAUTY of southern Thailand was stunning.

Some of the technology Toys-r-us has are cash registers and barcode scanners. Every single product has a barcode. The barcode is a secret code that can be read by a scanner. When you put a barcode up to a scanner it will read the secret code and look up the product in the computer system. It can then give you the price of that product. Toys-r-us have price scanners so customers can see what price a product is if it doesn’t have the price on it. The barcodes are used to make sure the price is right. When you go to checkout the employee scans the barcode. This brings up the price you have to pay. The store has to keep track of how many of each product they have left so they don’t run out. When a product is scanned at the cash register it calculates how many are left. The store needs to know this so they reorder before they run out. | Technology

Overall Opinion My overall opinion is that Toys-r-us is a hardworking business. I didn’t think selling toys was so complicated. I didn’t know that they had so many customers coming each week. I think this is a perfect business to use when you want a toy or to buy a birthday or easter gift.

Interesting Facts *Toys-r-us uses sales to get people to buy their products *Sometimes you want to buy something that’s only on the website, not at the store. So you can ship it to the store and pick it up there. You would do this if you don’t want to pay for shipping. *There are 875 stores in the US. There are 600 outside of the US. *Toys-r-us was originally called Children’s Supermart before it was called Toys-r-us. *They make over 13 billion dollars a year. *Their mascot is Geoffrey the giraffe.
