S: Dixie & Jamie go to Arches National Park

BC: An amazing adventure!

FC: Dixie & Jamie go to Arches National Park

Driving from Colorado Springs to Moab, we decided to take the scenic route, stopping along the way to break up the driving. First stop: a small park we discover.

They were serious about the scenic drive. This is what we saw from the highway.

Here, we are enjoying the sights at a rest area. | A fewmore interesting sights from our drive - a bridge with no bottom and a rib cage picked clean.

The sun begins to set as we reach our destination, Moab. Tomorrow - we're off to Arches!!

We are headed for Devil's Garden, but keep getting sidetracked by the beautiful landscape we see along the way. | Driving into Arches National Park

 Park Avenue

Three Penguins | Three Gossips | Sheep Rock | The Organ

 Devil's Garden... | The trailhead

The hike of a lifetime begins!

 Landscape Arch

One of the world's longest natural arches, it spans 306 feet. In 1991, a piece of rock 60 ft long, 8ft wide, & 4 ft thick fell from the underside.

Dixie begins climbing the rocks. Jamie - Umm, I don't think we are supposed to go that way. Dixie - Yes we are. See that pile of rocks - you are supposed to follow those.. | We made it!

Jamie wouldn't join me., I wonder why? That's a long drop | Looking at one rock through another | In order to be called an arch, the opening must have a light opening of at least 3 feet in any direction.

 Partition Arch

Navajo Arch | above Navajo Arch

 Hiking to...

Looking up at the top of the arch | After a 2 mile hike, Dixie is fading fast. Can you find her below? | Double O Arch

Dark Angel | By now, Dixie's beginning to wonder if she'll make it back to the car.

LIVE WELL LAUGH OFTEN LOVE MUCH | Skyline Arch | in 1940, a large piece fell & doubled Skyline's size.

Balanced Rock an amazing defiance of gravity | Total Height: 128 feet Bourlder Height: 55 feet Boulder Weight: 3,500 tons | Eventually, the faster-eroding Dewey Bridge Member will cause the collapse of Balanced Rock.

The Windows Section as seen from Balanced Rock

Hiking in the Windows Section | North Window | South Window

 Spectacles

Still in the Windows Section, we visit Turret Arch.

The 3rd largest arch in the park. The larger side is 144 ft wide by 112 ft high! | and Double Arch

Do you see Double Arch behind the flower?

Early morning sunlight makes the rocks glow | Our hotel- Red Stone Inn | Three Gossips | Park Avenue | The Organ

Hiking to Delicate Arch . . . | not as intense as Devil's Garden, but we still managed to lose the "trail" a few times.

That trail is awfully narrow & that drop is awfully far . . .

Delicate Arch 32 feet wide 46 feet high

After a quick shower, we pack up and head back to Colorado. | So long bridge with no bottom.

If our highways looked like this, I wouldn't mind them so much.
