FC: Bald Head Island August 7-15, 2010
Through an exhaustive search of VRBO we found a pretty Villa to rent. As we pull into the Villa development, we are greeted by this "Caution" sign. Now moose move over, we are on an alligator hunt!!
To get to BHI you needed to leave your car and take a ferry. We arrived early to the ferry station and were able to get over to the island a couple of hours earlier than expected.
We enjoyed the ferry ride. It was a great way to start the trip not only because it was a fun boat ride but because it quickly put you into the vacation mindset. It transported you to a relaxing and beautiful beach island!
One of the unique features of BHI is that there are no cars allowed. In order to get around everyone drives a golf cart. However, in order to get to your Villa where the golf carts are located you need to take a shuttle.
We were a little anxious about the whole shuttle process, but it turned out to be very efficient. As you can see by the smiles, it was a very relaxing and stress free experience.
 Villa 55
The bedroom where Jeff and I slept. | The bedroom where Grammy and Pop slept.
The kids' upstairs "suite". They really enjoyed their own loft with balcony and a powder room.
I love the first night on the beach. It is fun to explore and get excited about where we are going to be spending the week. This beach was huge, gorgeous and empty! The water was warm. We love the southern beaches!
Of course, the kids had a blast playing in the surf. Jarod got soaked and got sand in his shorts, which he doesn't enjoy! We were all cracking up because of how Jarod was walking off the beach. Because he had sand in his shorts he was trying to keep his legs from rubbing together. Jeff and Jordan joined Jarod in his funny walk off the beach.
Lucky for us there was a lighthouse on BHI to climb, "Old Baldy". Although Jordan was not looking forward to the climb up the rickety steps, she had a smile on her face going in. Although we all made it to the top, I must agree the steps were rickety and even made me nervous! The view was pretty though.
It was great watching the kids play in the sand together. Even Jeff joined in the fun. There was a consistent breeze on the beach so Jeff, Jordan and Jarod could easily fly a kite.
Jarod loves the beach! He loves the water and playing in the sand. Early in the week he decided to cover himself with sand. He had a blast! The problem was he rubbed all the sunscreen off and ended up with a nasty sunburn!
Grammy and Pop enjoyed a day on the beach with us. The waves were pretty good size so Jeff and the kids were boogie boarding. Pop gave it a try but it was too much for his shoulder. Grammy enjoyed sitting and relaxing.
The alligator hunt is on...now its over. We found one the first time out! The alligator hunt was not nearly as exhaustive as the Maine moose hunt. We were told at the island conservancy the best place to spot a gator. The first time we went there we saw one. He was about 10 feet long and pretty impressive!
We stopped by to visit "Aragator" many times during our week at BHI. Surprisingly (or not surprisingly!), Jarod chose to purchase a stuffed alligator for his souvenir.
Jeff almost ran head on into this BHI resident.
We spent one night of our week on a "Turtle Walk". On the walk, we learned about different types of sea turtles. Then we went to the beach to try and see a Loggerhead Sea Turtle nest hatch. | Even though it seemed like we were going to get lucky, after much waiting the nest remained unhatched. Because it was getting late, we had to give up and head home to get some sleep.
There wasn't much to do on the island besides hang out on the beach so when I heard about the GPS Scavenger Hunt we decided to give it a try. It was a lot of fun. Grammy and Pop joined us for the scavenger hunt. It was a great way to explore the island.
Before my run one morning, I spotted the alligator that lived in the waterways around the Villa. It was very exciting to spot and watch the 12 foot alligator.
Besides seeing alligators on the island, we also saw foxes. One night at dusk we saw two on the 18th green. Another night, we saw a fox on the beach attracted by s'mores being cooked on a fire.
We enjoyed watching the croquet matches from our Villa. We were impressed with how serious the players took their game.
Grammy and Pop treated us to dinner at the Shoals Club. We enjoyed dressing up and having a fancy dinner. Jeff and his Dad are sporting their beach wear. Don't they look good!! You would never guess they were related!
