52: Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood | Alexander the II was assassinated at this Church March 1, 1881 by a terrorist bomb. He died March 13, 1881 The Church was ransacked during the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. Was used as a morgue during World War ll Was used for potato storage during and after World War ll The Church was to be destroyed by order of the government but Instead it was turned over to St. Isaacs Cathedral in 1970. The restoration took 27 Years and was Re-opened in 1997. The structure does not function as a church any longer but as a museum.
