FC: Binding Feet: Ancient Chinese Tradition
1: In ancient China, women with smaller feet were considered prettier and more desirable for marriage. To make sure women could be the most desirable, they started binding their feet. This is where women wrap their feet so tight throughout their life that their feet become distorted and extremely small.
2: When girls had their feet bound, it was extremely painful and almost impossible to walk. Many women became illiterate because they couldn't walk to school. | The tradition is starting to die out, but there are a few elderly women in China with feet only a few inches big. | The goal of binding is to break the arch of the foot and curl the toes under. The binding breaks bones and brings the heel inward.
3: Any woman with feet larger than 3 inches was consider unrefined and of a lower class. In ancient China women with feet larger than 4 inches were considered to be a myth. Those with larger feet were to at best be sold into slavery to work for those with bound feet.
