FC: throughout the years | Coal mining: | " With black covered faces, and hard calloused hands, we work the dark tunnels, unable to stand. To labor and toil as we harvest the coals, we silently pray "Lord, please harvest our souls."

1: In 1834, the first commercial coal mining company in the Kanawha Valley was incorporated. | Between 1840 & 1860 many coal companies became organized. | The southern coalfields did not officially open until 1870's, even though they were known to exist much earlier. | In 1888, Fayette County was the first county to produce more than 1 million tons in 1 year | By 1919, the largest nonunionized region in the eastern United States consisted of Mingo & Logan counties. | In response to the union, the battle over Blair Mtn. happened. 12 miners were killed & 4 deputies.

2: Miners lived in company housing, were paid in script, & also paid on how many tons were mined | 1913 - 48 cents per ton, averaging to be 737.62 a year.

3: In 1921 - The United States Coal Commission examined the miner's living conditions for two years concluding that they were inadequate | They had low water supply, up to 30 people got water from one hydrant. Creeks were the only option for some families, which contained sewage & typhoid

4: A lot of important events happened between the years of 1930 & 1950 for the coal industry. | 1931- WV overtakes Pennsylvania for the leading producer of bituminous coal. | 1934- this is when the first coal reserves for WV were first calculated | 1939- Mine certifications were first issued

5: 1940- peak employment rose in WV to 130,457 miners | 1942- The first surface mining operations were recorded. | 1948- Finally began using roof bolts for top support.

6: Provides 40,000 direct jobs in WV | In 2005, WV produced 159 million tons of coal, which was 15% of all the coal mined in the US | McDowell county has produced more coal than any county. | Recent facts

7: Coal occurs in all counties except Jefferson & Hardy
