1: Cyclops the Mythical Creature | Austin Gates | English Honors 9 | December 3, 2010
2: There were many mythical creatures on the earth and Cyclopes was one of them. They were not allowed on earth because Zeus forbid them. After some time, Zeus remitted them back to earth and then begin to like them. Zeus gave them a home out in the country where the vineyards and the cornfields were located. The Cyclopes had plenty of food. They practically lived off goats and sheep. Odysseus, beached his boat on the shore. He and 12 men began to explore the land and they found a cave. The gate that led into it was open so they walked in to explore. They made their way through carrying a bottle of wine to give any inhabitants. Along the whole wall there was food and animal skins hanging. The men ate on the food while waiting on the owner to come. Then finally, a large beast came into the cave. This was Polyphemus, the Cyclops. He caught sight of the strangers and asked who they were. Odysseus the Greek God replied, "We are the warriors from Troy under the protection of Zeus". | Cyclopes Story
3: Then Polyphemus said, "I do not like this man". He then picked up two of the men and ate them whole. This made Odysseus think. He could wait until Polyphemus went to sleep and kill him or try to escape. When they tried to escape they found that Polyphemus put the stone in front of the door. The only one that could move it was the Cyclops himself. The next morning Polyphemus woke up to the sheep outside. He removed the stone from the gate like it was a feather. Still Odysseus sat in the cave with some of the few men he had left. He was trying to think of a plan to escape the cave before he got eaten. So when he started thinking he remembered that a large piece of timber fell near the place. They cut a piece off and made it sharp to a point. When the Cyclops returned they had it finished and already hid in the cave. Then Odysseus offered him some wine. When the Cyclops drank it he demanded more. After two or three more cups he passed out drunk on the floor. Odysseys and the men quickly got the weapon and made it real hot by putting the tip in the fire and stabbing it through his one eye. When they were done they quickly sneaked off. The men hid under the rams stomach, because they knew that he would not check under it. When he let the rams out they knew that they would get out with them.
4: When they reached a safe distance away, Odysseus begin to taunt him because he could not see anything. This made the Cyclops furious with them. As they were leaving, he picked up a great chunk of the mountain and threw it to their ship. It came very close to the ship, but never hit it. When Odysseus was way out in the sea he kept taunting him more. They were so far out Cyclops couldn't do anything back to them. Centuries passed before they ever heard from the Cyclopes again.
