2: Athena and her uncle Poseidon were both equally in love with the same city in Greece. They both said the city belonged to each of them. Poseidon and Athena decided that the one that could give the most superior gift should have it. Leading a parade of citizens, the two gods mounted the Acropolis. Poseidon struck the side of the mountain with his trident and a spring appeared. The people gazed at it, but the water was very salty as Poseidon’s sea and it was not very useful to the city. Athena’s gift was an olive tree, which was a more useful gift to the people. The olive tree provided them with food, oil, and wood. Athena names her city Athens.
