BC: By Casey Kiani
FC: Abdul's Adventures
 Abdul Age 17, Afghan
Located in Asia, Afghanistan is a country full of deserts and mountains. It is landlocked by Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, Iran, and Pakistan. It is a Muslim country, and it has been ravaged by its neighbors for thousands of years. In 1979, it was invaded by Soviets, sending refugees fleeing to places such as Iran and Pakistan. In 1989, the Soviets finally withdrew.
Abdul is an Afghan immigrant. Him and his family fled Afghanistan after fear of Soviet Russia attacking. | After fleeing from Kandahar, they arrived in Zahedan, Iran illegaly.
After learning that he needs an Iranian birth certificate to enroll in school, he instead takes up a job as a plumber’s assistant. His other brothers also get jobs, but instead they become tailors. They stay in Iran for six years. Then, Abdul’s father says that they are going to the United States so they can have an education and a future. So, yet again, they illegaly entered another country, Pakistan, to visit the American Embassy. But before they could obtain papers to go to the U.S., his father died in his sleep. They got the papers, and went to the U.S.
Compared to Me: | Abdul and I are both of Middle-Eastern descent, though he was actually born there and I wasn't. | We both watch "Three's Company"
Contrasting to Me: | More willing to do things for his family, such as give up his education to support them. | More family oriented (thinks first for his family, then himself)
SYMBOL | Abdul talked about how after a few years, he started to fit in. The Aviator sunglasses he wore after he started to fit in. The Aviators represent change and him becoming a different person.
Most Interesting Part of His Life | Abdul was smuggled along with his family into Iran across the desert, so they could flee Iran. They had little water, little food, and were trapped in a small space for many days.
