Authors Page | My name is Cassandra Griffin and I am 12 years old. I was living a normal teenage life when all of a sudden on Monday January 25,2011, I came home from school and began having what I thought was a migraine headache. That night at 5:30 PM the pain had progressed down my neck and spine. My grandmother made a doctors appointment for the next day. When I woke up, I could not move my legs. I could not stand or walk without falling. We went to my neurologist who took a MRI of my brain. The diagnosis later that same day was that I had a sinus infection in my brain. Not satisfied, we hung up and made a follow-up appointment with my pediatrician who said the MRI showed a thing called Chiari Malformation. This is a hernia or tumor on my small brain. The only way to fix it is surgery. I was devastated. To learn more about my condition, I decided to write a book so that I can learn more about it and to possibly help other parents and children who are going through the same thing.
What is Chiari Malformation? | Chiari Malformation is a structural defect in the cerebellum. This part of the brain controls movement and balance. It is where the brainstem and cerebellum are being forced downward.
What are some symptoms of Chiari Malformation? | In older children signs of this may be headache, spinal curvature, clumsiness, seizures, neck and back ache, and in rare cases controlling bladder functions.
What are diagnoses of Chiari Malformation? | An MRI scan is the best way to diagnose a Chiari Malformation. The brain and spinal cord can be seen from many different angles. Other tests and procedures may be needed depending on the severity.
Is there a treatment if so what can be done? | Yes, there are treatments many times depending on the severity. Doctors will observe the patient over time if your case progresses. Many times they will do surgery. Surgery is the only way headaches are eliminated and limb movement are regained.
What are the risk of surgery? | During surgery doctors will make an incision opening the bottom portion of the skull. They will drill a small hole in the skull and take away a piece of bone. This bone will not be replaced so the brain has room to repair its self. The incision is closed and surgery is complete. Multiple surgeries may be required to complete the procedure.
 Motivational Quotes
Life is what you make it so make it your dreams
Don't let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do. Life is limited and your not granted tomorrow. Make your life worth while.
DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU YOU'RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR ANYTHING. PROVE TO EVERYONE YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD AND A CHILD OF STRENGTH.
If God is for you who could be against you?
Why I made this book? | On January 25,2011 I was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation. It started off as a headache (which i normally had) then I noticed it spread to my neck then my back then the next morning my legs went numb and limp I could walk but it was very slow and painful. I had to miss 3 days of school and I was behind on some work so I decided to get a wheelchair and roll myself around the school and public places. The first couple of days at school,in public, around friends, and at games was hard because people would stare at me constantly or gawk at you. I realized I had to get use to this. I advice second or third opinion. I was strong during this process I wanted to prove that if I could fight anybody and anything I can fight this If you are diagnosed with this you are still a normal person. Then on the 5th of February I was in a Miss CMS pageant I came in 1st place. This just goes to show you anyone can do anything.
