S: Christmas in Europe 2010

FC: Frenier Christmas in Europe 2010

After almost 24 hours of travel, we made it to Franfurt...only to discover that we landed right before the biggest storm in 50 years! The ever efficient German train system was running late (even though there was no snow on the ground yet!), but we finally got out and headed to Heidelburg. | First things first...Brezeln in the Frankfurt HBH!

Dec. 17 Heidelburg: Chris was supposed to come meet us for the day, but was stuck in Marburg due to weather. We toured the city, went to the Schloss and shopped at the Weinachtsmarkts. Mom discovers Gluhwein and Heather gets her Kasespetzle for lunch. After dinner at the Bier Brezeln we went to the living Nativity at Kornmarkt but found only a single Donkey!

Schloss Heidelburg We took the Furnicular up - it covered grades of almost 30%!

Dec. 18: Off to Marburg to meet Christopher. Almost ended up in Dillenberg when the train split, but some very nice German girls told us how to get on the Marburg Half. Went to the Weinachstmarkt and dinner and then off to bed!

Dec. 19: After breakfast at the hotel, we met Chris and walked up to the Schloss. After touring the castle, we had cake and coffee at Cafe Vetter then back to the hotel to take a nap before dinner. That evening we went to Giessen and had dinner with Chris' friend Tanya and her mom at their family's Greek restraunt, Knossos. The food and company were both AMAZING. We even tried Ostrich, which was very good. About 11pm we finally got back to Marburg and headed to bed!

Dec.20: Traveled from Marburg to Brugge. It was a long day on the trains. The train to Brussels was cancelled when we got to Frankfort am Main. Mom and Heather spent a long cold windy hour waiting with the luggage while the boys tried to figure out plan B. We hustled and ended up just barely making a train to Belgium at Frankfort Airport...it was our original train! Finally got to Brugge about 10pm. We took a taxi to the apartment and then went across the street to get dunner for dinner at a snack shop since nothing else was open. After that the boys headed to the bar, and mom and Heather went back to the apartment to work on some laundry.

Dec 21: Took the train about an hour out to Kortrijk to see Diane and Paul. Made it to Kortrijk, but had to wait over an hour to get a cab out to Pual and Diane's due to the snow. Once there, we had a wonderful visit - Diane is an amazing cook. Finally left about 7pm after lots of food, and many beers, glasses of wine and Belgian liquores. Diane even loaded us up with snacks for the rest of the trip.

Dec 22: Toured Brugge with stops at the Salvidor Dali exhibit, lunch on the market square, and a city tour. Chris and Heather climbed to the top of the clock tower. Wandered the shops for beer, chocolate, and Christmas ornaments. Today was the day of the infamous "Bruise of Brugge" when Mom fell down the apartment steps! Fleece socks and hardwood floors do not mix!!

Dec 23: To Garmisch by train...another long day of train rides and weather delays. Missed the connection in Frankfort due to train delays in route from Brussels - ended up catching a train to Mannheim and then on to Munich. Finally arrived in Garmisch and got to the apartment about 8pm. Had dinner at Moroni's and then watched some TV before bed.

Dec. 24: Christmas Eve! Went grocery shopping and then Christmas shopping. Found Jack Wolfskin (the German North Face) and a couple awesome bakeries. | The boys took afternoon naps and then walked all over Garmisch looking for dinner. Ended up at a wonderful traditional German restaurant. Saw an elderly lady who had been coming in since the 1970s!

Merry Christmas! Opened presents, had Christmas Dinner and then walked around town. The boys did some major window shopping! Had Gluhwein at the market and then went home for desserts and "wizard" - Heather won big!

Went in search of internet and landed at McD's! It was the only internet cafe open on Christmas!

Dec. 26: Skiing on the Zugspitze! Mom and Dad came up for the afternoon. We took the cogwheel train up, skied for a while, had lunch (Spetzle and beer) at the ski lodge and then met up with Mom and Dad to take the cable car down. Dinner at Cosseolo - Italian food in Bavaria!

Dec. 27: Left Garmisch and took the train to Munich to meet up with the Widders, who were in Europe for vacation. After lunch, off to Frankfort via another canceled train. So much for train reservations this trip!

Dec. 28: Met Chris in Frankfurt after sitting around waiting for the shuttle for almost an hour. Visited the Dom, Paulskirche, the Opera House and wandered around the city. Dinner at a Bavarian establishment included Apfelwein. After dinner, Chris headed back to Marburg and the rest of the family headed back to the hotel for a 0330 wakeup in the morning!

Dec 29: Back to the US Overall, a memorable and fun filled trip to Europe! Can't wait to go back!
