S: Our Adoption Story
FC: Douglas & Marissa
Our journey together began in 1999 and in 2005 we were married, surrounded by our loving family and friends. Our life together has taken us down many wonderful paths. The path that has led us to adoption has been the most rewarding. In 2007 we decided to become foster parents and we were blessed to have met two precious little boys who changed our lives in so many ways. The boys spent a year in our home and a lifetime in our hearts. We want to thank you for letting us share a little piece of us with you and hope you will consider us in your adoption plan. We would be honored and blessed to have a child join our family. Our Story
 Douglas's Story
I was born and raised in Vero Beach, Florida and have a sister Michelle and three foster brothers named Shawn, Kasey and Jeramiah. When my foster brothers came to live with my family I was already seventeen years old and they were eight, six and three. I didn't know how long they would stay with us but having little brothers was a great adventure. To this day the boys are a big part of my life and I am proud to be looked up to for guidance in their lives. I hope to have a child of my own someday with the woman I love. I know together we will make great parents and I am excited at the thought of sharing that journey with Marissa.
 Marissa's Story
I was born in New Haven, Connecticut and moved to Sebastian, Florida with my family when I was eight years old. I have two brothers, Kenny and Peter and more cousins than I can count. Douglas and I had been dating for a year when we found out that I could not conceive a child. I was nineteen years old and I thought my life was over. | I didn't know at that point that Douglas would not only be my husband but he would be my best friend who I could count on in good times and bad. He made me realize I am meant to be a mother just not in the conventional way.
Our Childhood | Douglas - Growing up I enjoyed going to the beach and surfing whenever I could. I also was involved in the drama club and have performed in many plays. All through high school I also played football until I injured my knee when I was a senior. When I was two years old I met a boy named Paul and to this day we have remained the best of friends. We love to get together during football season to watch all the games. | Marissa - As a child I enjoyed swimming in our pool as much as possible after we moved to Florida. I was also the neighborhood babysitter which kept me busy after school and many weekends. As a family we enjoyed playing miniature golf or going bowling at least twice a month. Most of our family remained in Connecticut which made holiday get-togethers very special for me.
Douglas and I met in 1999 at a mutual friends house in Florida I was eighteen and Douglas was twenty-two. I had just graduated high school and Douglas had come home from College in New York. All of our friends were surprised how quickly we fell in love. I think we were surprised too. | Our Journey Together
In 2000 Douglas and I moved to Washington State together with a few friends and our dog Blaze. Washington was an adventure to say the least. When we got there we were all surprised to see that there was no air conditioning in the apartment. For a bunch of Floridians that was a big deal. We soon realized we didn't need air conditioning. The weather was amazing during the summer. Then came the rain and it rained and rained for months it seemed. By October it was hard for us Floridians to be without the sunshine any longer so we decided to try a new adventure and we moved to California together. We left our friends in Washington and went on a trip of our lifetime! We didn't know anyone or have jobs lined up in California. We just took a chance and we wouldn't change anything if we could go back today. Moving so far from all of our family and friends was very difficult for us both but we grew to trust each other in so many ways. We stayed in California for three years and then decided to move back home to Florida to be close to family again. We hope to someday travel again but we know right now that Florida with family is where we need to be.
 The Wedding
In 2000 we began a new tradition of meeting at the beach at midnight on Christmas Eve with all of our friends. Everyone would be in town to celebrate the holidays with their families and we all knew to meet up at our favorite spot so we could all be together. In 2003 Douglas proposed surrounded by many of our closest friends. The wedding planning began soon after and in May of 2005 we were married. The wedding, to us, was a celebration of our love and the next step in combining our families. The Christmas Eve beach tradition still exists to this day but as everyone has gotten older and started families of their own we just meet a little earlier.
 Family and Friends
We were both brought up in loving and stable environments and have learned from our parents how to teach respect for others. Our families and friends are all very excited about our plans to adopt. We look forward to sharing our family traditions and to start new ones with a child. We will give our child the tools to know right from wrong and raise them to be strong and independent. Our friends are very important to us and we hope our values will help our child grow up to have long lasting friendships like we are blessed to have. As you can see in the pictures, we have a lot of nieces and nephews who we enjoy spending time with. We love to take them bowling or to the movies as much as possible. We are ready to welcome a child into our loving home.
Douglas's Career Douglas has been a manager of a hydroponic gardening store since 2006. His job has also become his passion. He grows organic vegetables and herbs and also teaches others how to grow all their own organic food. Since 2008 he has competed in our local Firefighters Annual Chili Cook-off competition which he makes using the hot peppers he grows and has won People's Choice Award two years in a row. Our home is always full of organic fresh vegetables.
Marissa's Career I have been the manager of a Jackson Hewitt tax service office since 2007. I have always enjoyed working with people and my job allows me to work closely with the community. In 2010 Jackson Hewitt also entered in the Firefighters Annual Chili Cook-off competition competing against many other local businesses including Douglas's company. Douglas's peppers might have helped him beat us this once, but we will definitely enter again next year and win!
 Adventures and Hobbies
Our fondest desire is to share our life with a child. We love to have fun and having a large extended family living close by makes weekend get togethers the highlight of our life. Living in Florida lets us have summer type activities all year round. With the beach close by there will always be tons of sand castles and family BBQ's. We hope to give our child a great education and always be there not only for help with homework but to teach them life lessons as well. We would love the chance to share our life and the abundance of love we have to give to a child. | Our Future
