S: Shaun C. Nua's Baptism: September 29, 2010

BC: I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8: 12

FC: Baptism of Shaun C. Nua September 29, 2010 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

“Baptism is a sign to God, to angels, and to heaven that we do the will of God, and there is no other way beneath the heavens whereby God hath ordained for man to come to Him to be saved, and enter into the kingdom of God, except faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, and baptism for the remission of sins, and any other course is in vain; then you have the promise of the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, 4:553–557)

Now this is the commandment: Repent, all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day. 3 Nephi 27:20

I am part of the fellowship of the unashamed. The dye has been cast! I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made; I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I won't look back, let up, slow down, or be still. My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure. I'm finished and done with low living, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tainted visions, worldly talking, cheap giving, and dwarfed goals. I no longer need pre-eminence, positions, promotions, plaudits or popularity. I now live by faith, lean on His presence, walk with patience, am uplifted by prayer, and labor with power. My face is set, my gait is fast, and my goal is Heaven. My road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions are few, my guide is reliable, my mission is clear! I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, divided or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of the adversary, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I won't give up, shut up, or let up, until I have stayed up stored up, and paid up of the cause of Christ. I must go till He comes, give till I drop, preach till I know, and work till He stops me. And when He returns for His own, He will have no problem recognizing me. My banner will be clear. (Quote from Shaun's Talk)

September 30, 2011 The baptismal service was a wonderful, spiritual evening. The spirit was so strong and I believe it touched each person individually. The musical number brought in the spirit full force. The Atuaia's did a wonderful job singing, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." This whole week has been hectic and even more so for Shaun. Lots of football and homework on the back of his mind. Even with all of the stress, Shaun felt prepared and excited to enter the waters of baptism. I asked him earlier that day how he was feeling about the baptism, he related he was nervous. Even so, the spirit was strong and I am positive was there supporting Shaun throughout the evening. In the beginning of the week, Shaun estimated or better yet guestimated that about 40-50 people would come. He would get frustrated with me when I said I knew over 100 would be there. Well, over 200 came! What support!! Lots of people love Shaun. They actually had to announce not everyone could go witness the baptism, because the Relief Society room would not accommodate so many. Shaun went down into the waters of baptism and came out clean. The confirmation of the Holy Ghost was beautiful. Lance Reynolds blessed him with many blessings. I hope Shaun lives up to those blessings and strives to keep the spirit with him. The missionaries, Robert Anae, Mark Atuaia, and Lance Reynolds were all present in the circle.

Shaun had told the missionaries earlier that he wanted to talk at his baptismal service. So after the confirmation and Coach Tidwell’s talk, it was his turn. Wow! I cannot write the feelings I felt, they would do disgrace to what spirit was actually present. However, I will attempt to share some of his thoughts. Shaun related being raised properly but getting lost when he came over here to the states. He mentioned Coach Mendenhall pulled him aside and inform him of his arrogance and poor nature. Shaun didn’t believe him. Eventually, however, he understood and started coming to his roots again. He bore witness of the path that led him to his baptism. Essentially, his whole path has consisted of many L.D.S. influences; in high school, Eastern Arizona, BYU, Steelers, and now back at BYU. He shared a powerful quote about not being ashamed to follow Christ. Loved the quote, he read it great also. He shared his priority to still be a friend with all the inactive and non-members. He told his mom, he loved her. He ended by saying that he knows the church is true and that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. Ah! So powerful. Overall what a great baptismal service! (Journal Entry: Melissa Russell)

“The love of family is life's greatest blessing”

Shaun's Parents came all the way from Samoa to support him. It meant a lot to Shaun to have them there!

Faith of our Father "As the restored Church of Jesus Christ blossoms throughout the globe, now with more than 13 million members, the faith of our fathers' has an expanded meaning. . . . Often when people learn of the restored gospel, they are impressed by it, many even want to join the Church. But they are reluctant to disappoint their ancestors; they feel they should be true to the faith of their fathers. . . . "What, then, is the faith of our fathers? Is it the religion of our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents? "But what of the faith of the ancient ones before them? What of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? . . . of the Savior and those disciples who followed Him? "The faith of our Father in Heaven has been consistent since the beginning of time, even from before the foundation of this world. "We believe in the great plan of happiness, the plan of redemption, the plan of salvation, whereby God's children may experience mortality and return to the presence of the Father, a merciful plan established from before the foundation of this earth. "This is the plan and the faith of our Father!" President Dieter F. Utchdorf

"Because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we need not fear, for we will live forever, never to taste of death again. Because of His infinite Atonement, we can be cleansed of sin and stand pure and holy before the judgment bar. The Savior is the Author of our Salvation." Dieter F. Utchdorf

“All you have to do is trust your Heavenly Father. Trust Him enough to follow His plan.” Dieter F. Utchdorf

"There is no end to the good we can do, to the influence we can have with others. Let us not dwell on the critical or the negative. Let us pray for strength; let us pray for capacity and desire to assist others. Let us radiate the light of the gospel at all times and all places, that the Spirit of the Redeemer may radiate from us." President Gordon B. Hinckley

"A friend is more concerned about helping people than getting credit. A friend cares. A friend loves. A friend listens. And a friend reaches out." President Thomas S. Monson

"I urge our people everywhere, with all of the persuasiveness of which I am capable, to live worthy to hold a temple recommend, to secure one and regard it as a precious asset, and to make a greater effort to go to the House of the Lord and partake of the spirit and the blessings to be had therein." —Gordon B. Hinckley
