FC: Flat Stanley visits the rohrbachs
Dear Ana, According to my calculations, it is Monday, March 14, 2011. I feel as if I have arrived somewhere chilly. | I hear kids giggling. Whoa...slow down! | Some little girl is saying something about Lake Bluff, Illinois. That is 1,800 miles from Mesa, Arizona! | Hey, be careful. I am flat but not stretchy! | Finally, out of that envelope. | Here is Boden and Skyla. They are my new friends. They said they would show me around town and play with me. I think I am going to have fun here!
Dear Ana, Boden showed me on a map where Lake Bluff is located. I am a long ways away from you. He told me that it is the end of winter and the beginning of spring. However, it is still pretty cold here. Good thing he let me borrow his mittens. I see snow!
Here I am with the whole family! Jack, Kelly, Skyla, Boden Rohrbach and me, Flat Stanley
Dear Ana, My new friends showed me around their house. They also shared with me their favorite things to do. | Here I am watching TV with Skyla. Her favorite shows are Curious George and Wild Kratts. | Skyla told me that she loves to do science projects. Here is a model of Earth, the solar system, and even a T-Rex she named Dina. | Boden and Skyla love to paint! | Today is St. Patrick's Day. Kelly and Boden made me a green shirt to wear, so I won't get pinched! | Jack and the kids planted apple seeds. One day they hope these sprouts grow into real apple trees!
Dear Ana, Today, Skyla and Boden took me to their gymnastics place called The Gym Spot. Wow! We had fun doing all kinds of tricks!
Dear Ana, The Rohrbachs showed me all around Lake Bluff today. It is a tiny town, but so cute! It has a little village, a train station, and a gazebo at its center. In the summer, they have a farmers' market every Friday, and evening concerts every Sunday. There are also lots of bike paths everywhere.
One of the best parts about Lake Bluff is that it is by Lake Michigan. The Lake is so huge it looks like an ocean and people call the coast "the beach".
Dear Ana, Today, Kelly and Skyla took me on a train ride! The train starts in Kenosha, Wisconsin and goes all the way to downtown Chicago. Many people ride the train to go to work, shop, or visit friends. We got on the train in Lake Bluff and got off in Highland Park. | We rode the Metra train, but there are lots of freight trains too. | Here comes our train! Toot, toot!
Highland Park is a fun place to go shopping and eat food. We went to Starbucks and ate scones.
Dear Ana, We went on a big adventure today to downtown Chicago. This place is a huge city where all the super tall buildings are. | Here we are driving toward the city. It takes about 45 minutes from Lake Bluff. The outline of the buildings is called the "skyline". | John Hancock Center 100 stories tall | Marina City "Corn Cob" buildings are 65 stories tall.
Chicago River It leads out to Lake Michigan. This week it is dyed green in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. | Lake Point Tower apartment skyscaper
This is Chicago from above! Looking out over Lake Michigan from the Sears Tower Skydeck. The view is from 103 floors high. Would you step out in this glass box called "The Ledge"? It is a long way down!
Cloud Gate "The Bean" is a giant steel bean that sits in Millennium Park. It is so cool because you can see the reflection of Chicago's skyline on the bean. | Wrigley Field is home to the famous Chicago Cubs baseball team The Wrigley family also owns Wrigley chewing gum.
Dear Ana, When we were downtown, we also went to the Chicago's Children Museum at Navy Pier. We got to pretend we were firemen, paleontologists, architects, and play with water, of course!
After all that sightseeing, we were hungry! We went to the Rainforest Cafe which seemed like yet another adventure! There were tropical fish, elephants, gorillas, thunderstorms, and even a sparkling volcano, which we ate! Yummy!!
Across the street is the huge and famous Rock 'n' Roll McDondald's. It has an escalator in the middle and fancy leather chairs. Next to that is the Hard Rock Cafe in Chicago.
Dear Ana, Today we went across the border to Wisconsin. It took about 20 minutes and we were in a new state. We visited the Jelly Belly Factory. They have millions and billions of jelly beans there! After the tour we tasted free samples like Chocolate Pudding and Buttered Popcorn. They even had flavors like Booger, Baby Wipes, and Barf. We did NOT try those! I brought you back some samples too!
Dear Ana, Did you know that March 20th is the first day of spring? People in Chicago go crazy for spring. They told me that the winter is long and cold and people are ready to see green things outside again. So, we went to the Chicago Botanic Gardens to look for signs of spring. | Signs of spring: The snow and ice are melting, robins are out, and plants are sprouting!
Tulips push through their bulbs for another sign of spring.
Cacao Tree The Chocolate Tree Its beans are used to make chocolate. | Bananas in Chicago?! Only in a greenhouse. | Nepenthes or "monkey cups" because monkeys have been seen drinking rain water out of them. These are carnivorous plants. Insects go in, but don't come out! | We were a little tired of searching so hard for spring, so we went into the greenhouse where it is summer all year around!
More beautiful things around the garden...
Dear Ana, My trip is over and it is time I get sent back to you. I had so much fun meeting the Rohrbachs and sightseeing all over town. I learned all about Lake Bluff, Chicago, and jelly beans. Thank you for sending me here, it was quite an adventure. I will see you in a few days. Meet you at the mailbox! Love, Flat Stanley
It sure is warm here. I think I hear Ana's voice! I hope I am back in Mesa, Arizona. | Any minute now... | Hi Ana! I am so glad to be home. Boy, do I need to stretch my legs and unfold my arms! | Wow! You and your sisters really liked those Jelly Beans! I know where we can get a lot more! | I can't wait to visit your 1st grade class at Las Sendas Elementary School and see your teacher Mrs. Brown. I think everyone will be excited to hear all about my adventures!
