DEDICATION PAGE This journal is dedicated to my friend Raymond and his great grandfather Johnny Raven. Johnny Raven and Raymond helped me survive mentally and physically when we were trapped in the Canadian wilderness.

Entry One Today our plane crashed in the river that connects to Virginia Falls. We knew we had to get the plane onto the river bank before we went into the falls. Raymonand I paddled so we would have more time. Then our pilot jumped in the river with a rope tied to our plane and he swam to the river bank and tied the rope to a nearby tree. We got out of the plane and then the pilot said "We need the supplies in the plane" (said by the pilot) By working together we got most of the supplies out of the plane

except for the bullets for the rifle. The pilot went back in the plane to get them and then the tree that the rope was tied to was uprooted and the tree, the plane, and the pilot fell down into the falls. Our pilot was the main reason we survived

Entry 2 Raymond and I wanted to head upstream while the river was still unfrozen. I told Johnny Raven "while the water is still unfrozen we could make a break for it and go upstream" (said by Gabe)

We convinced Johnny Raven to come with us. Then we made a raft out of trees and we put our supplies on it. Without Raymond we would have not have convinced Johnny Raven to come with us.

Entry 3 While we were going upstream on the raft we hit rough water and Johnny Raven fell out of the boat. "I looked around, but I couldn't see Johnny" (said by Gabe) Raymond and I got him out of the water when we found him.

Then we brought him into a nearby cabin and we tried to get Johnny to feel better. Without Raymond's help Johnny might have died right then and there.

Entry 4 About a day after Johnny died we found a ram. We trapped the ram with its back to the cave wall. Then Raymond said, "I could get him with the axe, but I need to get closer" (said by Raymond)

Then I lassoed the ram and Raymond killed it with the axe. If Raymond hadn't killed the ram I probably would have been dragged off the mountain.

Entry 5 Today we continued upstream on foot because the river was/is frozen. While we were walking we spotted a moose off to the side of the river. Raymond said that "if I get it we should have enough food for the winter" (said by Raymond)

He shot the moose and killed it with the last of our bullets. If Raymond hadn't killed that moose we would be dead for sure.

Entry 6 Today we got back to the cabin with our moose meat when we saw a grizzly bear had eaten some of the food we already had. Then it came back, so we climbed up the nearest tree with some of our food. The bear ate the food we left on the ground and it went away. After that Raymond said, "we'll freeze up here if we don't come down eventually." (said by Raymond)

We dropped down from the tree and went back into the cabin. If Raymond hadn't gotten me to climb up the tree once again I would be dead.

Entry 7 Today I went outside to get the rest of the moose meat. When I got the rest of the meat down from the tree the bear confronted me. Raymond's voice in my head to me "Don't run." (said by Raymond)

I didn't run, but instead I gave the bear the rest of the meat and it went away. As soon as it did I rushed back into the cabin. Without Raymond's wisdom I would have been bear food.

Entry 8 Today I had to make the most difficult decision of my life. I had to decide whether to pull Raymond on the raft to safety or to leave him behind and to just get help. I thought to myself "he'll die if I leave him behind" (said by Gabe) because he can't travel because of his broken ankle. (“There is a choice you have to make, in everything you do. You must always keep in mind that the choice you make, makes you.” quote 3 said by John Wooden)

My thoughts of Raymond dying alone inspired me to bring him along. This thought made me decide to take him with me.

Entry 9 Today I had to start pulling Raymond. The load was heavy, but if I showed any signs of weakness Raymond wouldn't let me take him with me. As I pulled the load I shouted in my head, "you can do this!" (said by Gabe)

Then I was able to pull him with no sign of weakness. (“When you do a thing, do it with all of your might. Put your whole soul into it Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.”quote 1 Ralph Waldo Emerson). Thinking of Raymond inspired me to pull extra hard and to succeed.

Entry 10 Today as I was pulling Raymond we came across a small ice bridge that we couldn't avoid. Then as I came up to it I said, "we all either make it together or die together." (said by Gabe)

I pulled as hard as I could and we made it over the bridge right as it broke apart. ("What does not destroy me makes me stronger" quote 2 19th-century German philosopher). I couldn't have done this without my mental determination and Raymond for inspiration.
