3: I am interested in doing illustrations for children’s books, with an emphasis on fairy tales. The reason why I am interested in fairy tales is that they provide me a space and opportunity to use my imagination, depicting fantastical worlds and characters. These illustrations are often rendered in acrylic and oil paint, and then later translated to a digital print, and formatted for books. Inventing characters are an important aspect of my illustrations. These characters may take the form of human beings or animals. On one hand, the decision of making invented characters are decided by the stories and concepts I illustrate. For the illustrations based on fairy tales, I have to invent and design characters in order to fit the specific story. These characters have a certain similarity with ordinary people and animals, but they still have something uncommon. For instance, I like to combine a lot of things with my characters’ heads, such as clouds, trees and animals. This difference can draw people’s attention and interest. Most of my characters face the audience directly with their eyes looking forward, and without outwardly expressing strong emotion. This compositional element is important because it reflects how I both personally and culturally express emotion, contrary to the way we might understand such things in Western image-making. This gesture of facing another person directly is what we do when talking to each other. I want my characters to communicate directly with the audience. In Buddhist culture, this is also the expression of a quiet and peaceful in mind, mercy, sincerity and generosity. I am also influenced by my study of Chinese ink paintings and Buddhist murals and sculptures throughout my life growing up in China. In both Chinese ink paintings and the Buddhist murals, most of the characters are painted in this manner facing the audience as well | 02

23: My next step is to do portraits of Chinese young generation. Because I am a member of them, this project allows me to think who I am and my experiences of growing up in a self-critical way. It is also an opportunity to develop my skills and to show my ability to do illustrations on different kinds of concepts. | 22
