FC: Hawaii Five-O | Glen & Carolyn Clark and Family April 21, 1961-2011
1: The Beginning March 17, 2011 Day 1 | Well almost 50 years of marriage and we are blessed and going strong! As a beginning of our celebration, Carolyn suggested that we take our family with us to Hawaii. So on March 17th, we left for Honolulu, Hawaii! We were excited to get going so we all went to Portland the evening of the 16th and stayed the night so we could catch an early flight to Hawaii. That evening we met at Red Robin for a kick-off dinner! Our precious family presented everyone with an awesome t-shirt with a wedding picture of the new wed couple (Glen & Carolyn) on the back and a Cross on the front that said Clark 50th Anniversary, signifying God's blessings on our family over the past 50 years! We were very moved by such a thoughtful gesture of love! The following morning, we boarded the plane for Hawaii. Jarred, Rachel, Jackson, Grace and Emma were on the earliest flight leaving. It was a maiden voyage for these three grandchildren. Glen, Carolyn, Jason, Juanita, Jordan and Joseph took a later flight and arrived in Honolulu a bit tired and sleepy, but excited to get our swim suits on and test the waters on Waikiki Beach. The weather was an awesome 85 degrees, and the kids, both big and small, hit the surf! There was sand in places where sand shouldn't have been on the kiddos by the time we were finished! After a few hours, we all returned to our rooms to shower and rest before dinner. The only casualty was Jason with a cut on his foot from a piece of coral! Dinner this Thursday evening was at Chili's restaurant. AFter a long, long wait, we enjoyed some awesome Mexican food (yes, Mexican food in Hawaii? Oh well!) Jackson laid his head on the table and went to sleep. The highlight of the dinner evening was a surprise presentation by Carolyn of a gift from auntie Jo that brought tears to everyone's eyes, acknowledging they would rather have had here here with us, healthy and enjoying the family time. Thank you, Auntie Jo! After a walk through the International Market Place, everyone made it back to our rooms! It was "lights out"! A new adventure was coming as we planned to visit Pearl Harbor on Friday! Oh yes, I must say that this is March Madness time (NCAA Basketball Tourney). It looks like Jarred is leading in the bracket picks, Jason making a bid to contention. Papa and Jackson are fighting it out for the cellar position :-(

9: Pearl Harbor Expedition March 18, 2011 Day 2 | Common sense prevailed this day as our plans for an early departure to visit Pearl Harbor was unanimously received by all! We were all pretty tired after the previous day's early flight and all the excitement of some late beach time. "Good decision," as it gave us all plenty of time to go to Duke's Breakfast Buffet and enjoy a great leisurely breakfast! Very nice! After a trip back to our rooms to gather our essentials for our "field trip", we met in front of the hotel where two "stretch limos" were waiting for us! Off we went to visit Pearl Harbor! Upon arriving at Pearl Harbor, we joined another few "bazillion" tourists for about a two hour wait and a walk around the historical site. Long wait! Our little Clarks were troupers, very and interested in this part of the history of our country. They actually bought some books and were able to get autographs of four war veteran survivors of Pearl Harbor. We all wandered around, took pictures and visited the museum before our turn came to board the excursion boat for a trip out to the Arizona Memorial. Unfortunately, Jarred continued to not feel well and suffered through all of our adventure, "giving it up for the team!" AFter our visit, we decided to take the "city bus" back to our hotel. Interesting "long" trip back. The good news was that we got to see part of the city we had never seen before - China Town, State Capitol and some other really different looking people! An hour and a half later, we had covered the 12-mile journey and were back to our home away from home. Jarred and Jason both hit the sheets (sick and tired) and the ladies went shopping. Papa took the kids to the beach! Whew! Yes, Papa even joined the kids in a little body surfing!?? Good day! A lot of "Memories Forever More!" The evening was a "do your own thing affair," with each family deciding what worked for them and some R&R time! Jason's family ate at Jimmy Buffet's Restaurant (Juanita and the boys got lost when they left Jason to shop the Street Market), Jarred's family ate in with food from Duke's and Grammy and Papa his Denny's. Oh, yes! Papa's March Madness bracket continued to compete with Jackson for the cellar position while Jason and Jarred's picks faired much better! Lights out!

16: Waikiki Beach A Perfect Day At the Beach March 19, 2011 Day 3 | Our plans changed. Today was originally scheduled for a trip to Hanauma Bay for some snorkeling, but the family again unanimously voted for a fun day at Waikiki Beach. I must say it was just a great day! The kids, big and small, ran from the waves, dove into the breaking surf, swam and, all in all, just enjoyed the warm water and the warm temperature of 85 degrees that slowly gave us a red glow! Ouch!" One near casualty was when Papa nearly got ran down by an incoming Outrigger canoe. But, alas! He survived. Our day on the beach ended with a ride around the entire Waikiki Bay area on a large Outrigger catamaran, where we saw sea turtles and even some breaching whales! Afternoon was spent resting in our rooms and applying lotion to our "new, very red complexion"! Evening brought us back together again for dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. Everyone was a bit weary, but thankful for a wonderful day! Oh yes, checking the NCAA brackets again (Sweet 16 round) found Jason moving up to 2nd place, Jarred dropping a bit to 4th and Papa and Jackson still fighting it out for the cellar position! We leave in the morning for Kauai. New adventures coming!

26: Island Hopping! March 20, 2011 Day 4 | Up, up and away! We are off to Kauai for seven days! That was quick, 37 minutes in the air and we landed in the beautiful "Garden Isle"! All went smooth, from taxis waiting for us at our hotel to arrival and check-in at the airport. After arrival, Jarred, Jason and I went to Avis rentals to pick up vehicles to transport us to our new home-away-from-home, "The Point at Poipu". We were not disappointed! It was a spectacular exchange for our condo at Eagle Crest! Carolyn reserved two, two-bedroom condos, plenty of room for everyone. After a bit of exploring (braving the wind), we decided to explore the Poipu shopping mall where we had dinner and an evening ending stroll around a variety of shops. If the weather cooperates, we are expecting a great week!
28: The Point at Poipu! March 21, 2011 Day 5 | "Early to bed, early to rise, makes one healthy, wealthy and wise?" Well, we did rise early today and set out to explore the beach and other surrounding resorts. In a word, "Beautiful!" Our resort is right next to the new Hyatt Regency resort and Poipu Golf Resort with nice walking paths all along the beach. After a late morning breakfast of Cheerios, we all made our way down to the pool for some fun in the sun! The pool was unique in that it was surrounded on three sides by a sandy beach that gave us the impression we were still on the beach. Except that the water was colder and the sand was coarser. While at the pool, Jackson and Rachel, Juanita and Jordan went into the activity area to take ukulele lessons. Grace and Emma showed their talent at the driftwood design table. Quite a creative bunch we have! After showers and lunch, it was time to set out on a survival mission to find food. Belonging to a hunting and gathering clan, we found our way to Costco wilderness area to stock up on supplies for the week. We returned with plenty of supplies! Grammy quickly created her special "Bottomless Taco Salad" to the delight of all. We gave thanks for God's provisions, for his touch on Auntie Jo's life and a great day! Lights out!
32: Let's Make a Deal! March 22, 2011 Day 6 | Tuesday morning started early with Jason, Juanita, Jarred and Rachel attending a sales presentation at 8:00 a.m. about purchasing a time share at this location. Long two hours for them, but were promised each a voucher for a mini-vacation at a Diamond Resort location in the near future. Grammy and Papa had the privilege of going on an oceanside hike with five grandchildren! Papa and Grammy felt like they got the best deal of the day! Everyone met at the pool later for sun, fun and a great family time! Afternoon found each of us migrating to our rooms for some down time, naps and watching basketball games. Evening brought us together for a great BBQ steak dinner, and an evening of visiting, sharing stories, solving world problems brought to our attention by Glenn Beck and talking about our next adventure. Tomorrow we plan to do the northern trip to Princeville and Hanalei! Good night all!
37: Tropical Taco, Here We Come! March 23, 2011 Day 7 | Our day started fairly early for our group... Note! Jarred, Rachel and the kids were in the car first, "Waiting" for the rest of us! With a Starbucks stop waiting in Lihue, off we went! Although we are on the oldest and smallest island (33 miles long and 25 miles wide, comprised of 552 square miles, with 90 miles being made up of beaches), nothing is said about the rough, poorly maintained roads with speed limits of 20 mph to a high speed of 50 mph. Slow moving, beautiful drive through Lihue, Kapaa', Princeville and finally Hanalei! By this time, we had traveled the 25 plus miles in heavy traffic to tour the National Tropical Botanical Gardens, with it's bird sanctuary and the Kilauea Lighthouse. It was on to Hanalei for lunch at the Tropical Taco to experience their specialty of "fish tacos" and "macho burritos"! Overpriced ($12.00) as are most items on the island, but very good. After a walk around the streets of Hanalei, some window shopping and shaved ice and ice cream treats, we headed out for roads end at Ke'e Beach. We walked around and watched people harvest coconuts as we strolled the beach and discovered sandy treasures. Our final discovery was the dry caves that shrouded the beach from the East. Heading home presented the same slow moving traffic and a few rainy downpours, but again we were surrounded by God's gift of natural beauty! Carolyn had one stop request on our way home to make a special purchase to complete her ensemble for our family pictures on Saturday. Beautiful! Papa took a short cut back to Poipu and Mom and Juanita whipped up some awesome pasta for dinner! "Food really tastes good when you're hungry!" Our evening entertainment consisted of easting pasting and watching American Idol" rooting for Scotty. Yes, Mom and Juanita even voted for him! Tomorrow is a down day of winging it on your own.

46: More Fun In the Sun! March 24, 2011 Day 8 | Thursday and time seems to be flying by! Today was catch-up day after a full day yesterday looking for Puff the Magic Dragon on the way to Hanalei. No particular schedule! Papa and Grammy went for an early walk into a super windy day on the beach, exploring some different neighborhoods on our way back to The Point. Jarred and Rachel arose early for a stop at Starbucks to start their day. All the kiddos caught up on some well-deserved sleep. About eleven, most of us found our way down to the pool for some swimming and sun. Grammy caught a quick nap before coming down. All in all, it was a very laid back day! A little excitement came late when Joseph decided to follow the rest of the gang into the deeper water. Fortunately, his daddy was on lifeguard duty and rescued "little Buckwheat" as he was bobbing up and down in the deep water. All was well, and another lesson well learned by five-year-old Joe! Jason and Jarred BBQ'ed some great steaks and we enjoyed an evening of food and laughter, as we watched some basketball and celebrated as Scotty made it to the final eleven on American Idol! It doesn't take much to entertain us; we laugh a lot! Lights out!
48: Up, Up and Away! March 25, 2011 Day 9 | Memories are made today! "The Guys", Jason, Jarred, Jack and Jordan made arrangements for an early morning helicopter ride up Jurassic Canyon (Wiaimea) and around the entire island of Kauai, a first for all involved. It was an awesome adventure starting out in a torrential downpour of rain and wind and finishing up in the brilliant sun of the Garden Isle! Grammy and Papa hiked out to Starbucks and were sure they saw the helicopter fly over! It was an exciting and earl start of the day! Afternoon found everyone swimming, sunning and napping as they prepared for the next adventure. This evening, the "kids" were treated to a Luau with great Hawaiian foods, Hula Dancers and awesome Fire Dancers! papa and Grammy took leave to have a special dinner date alone at Gaylord's, where they had dined in the past. A very enjoyable evening for all! Jordan's comment was that dinner was a 5 or 6, but the Fire Dancers were definitely a 10! Everyone returned safe and sound and went to bed fairly early in preparation for the coming Picture Day!
52: Smile! You're On Camera! March 26, 2011 Day 10 | Can it really be done? Ten plus years ago, six adults gathered at Fogerty Beach on the Oregon Coast for family pictures, no children or grandchildren yet. Now we return with anxious excitement to Shipwreck Beach in Kauai for family pictures. A time of culmination of a fantastic week together about to be put in the history book and albums for posterity! Grammy Carolyn arranged for a Kauai photographer, Naomi Wong, to meet us on the beach with unique ideas for each family, as well as the Clark Family Photo! Not knowing Naomi or her work, we were instantly impressed with her patience and professionalism. As I write this journal, we await preliminary digital samples of her efforts! I must compliment our great grandkids, they were real troopers. They were patient, calm, smiling when they would rather be swimming and cooperative in every way. I hope their efforts are rewarded with some great photos. Well, this is our last night in Kauai, so we had a luau of our own with a great center dish of Chicken Kauai, served up by BBQ Chef Jason. A mixture of delightful dishes complimented the main dish as Carolyn, Juanita and Rachel cleaned out the respective fridges! The highlight of the evening was when Papa, Rachel and Juanita were sent out on a mission to find dessert! Success, as they returned with two quarts of ice cream and grasshopper cookies. It was a fitting end to a great day!
66: Aloha and Mahalo! March 27, 2011 Day 11 | All good things must come to an end! All bags packed and reservations checked, it was time to say goodbye to the Garden Isle and head back to reality and home! I have to say, "If our 10 days together wasn't perfect, it was as close to perfect as can be!"
