FC: Good Dog Nick

Love you now and always Bennett Fallow Jessie Yester, Mimi, Alan and Reid Fallow

Nick was afraid to get out of his crate when I came to visit him at his foster home. There were 5 dogs there, cats, snakes, fish. He finally came out and we all went outside, there were small kids with the family who loved to run their hands along Nick as he walked by. Outside he roamed around and as the other dogs began to play he ran over and stared at them, perplexed by the tussle of hair and paws and tails. He then barked once or twice and sat watching. He then came over to see who I was as we know Nick loves attention but isn't always ready to show all his cards. | I fell in love with his big blocky head, long sad ears and eyes, and spotted tongue. He would look awkward at times, with a huge front and then seeing him sit from the side he was one of the most beautiful dogs I had seen. I knew then I wanted to have him in my life. Taking him home he couldn't figure out the front seat of the civic, was a bit worried but as he loved car rides was happy to be in the car. Something I would learn he would gladly be in at any time, almost more than walks.

The next few months I would learn how to take care of a dog on my own. We went on walks often, he loved every minute of being outside. He had separation anxiety and didn't like it when I left, and liked feeling secure in his crate at first. After a while I learned he had quite a bark and liked to let anyone and everyone know about it. I remember taking him home to Alexandria for the first time, how much he liked Chewy, the only dog to get along with Nick, and how we got confused constantly as to which was which.

He loved watching things, with almost an uncanny sense of sight. At times I fantasized about hunting with Nick in the past, how much fun we would have and letting him be out in the wild where he always tended to be most comfortable.

Nick was super picky about food, a surprising feat, as at the time the children in the neighborhood had taken to calling him Marley and tugging on this ears and pulling his tail. A group of them always ran over to say high to Nick, everytime, braving the 80 pounds of wagging uber shedding happiness | I learned he loved having his head out the window. His ears would go full horizontal and I would always find other drivers looking over and laughing or smiling at his puppy like attitude. He brightened everyone's day who met him. The office loved him, every stranger I met told me how beautiful my dog was.

Nick was an old soul, a well traveled companion who had the biggest heart you could imagine. People felt instantly connected to him. Once he entered your life he was there to stay. Everyone always asked me about Nick, people always wanted him over.

I also found out Nick had the best/worst farts of any dog I had ever been around. He would seriously knock out a room. I remember once he woke himself up he had farted so badly. He was so confused, but soon decided returning to sleep with a light grumble was the best treatment for the noxious fumes coming from $70 gourmet dog food a few hours earlier, that I had tried to find a new brand of.....

Nick was there when I needed him, on all those stressful days, the sad days, the hurt and injured days. He was there for Jessie and I's first date. He provided me confidence and conversation topics. He saved me from a lot of things. And taught me about loss and love and the impermanence that is life.

Nick hated camera's. I think because the first time he had his picture taken was for the rescue league. He knew what a camera looked like and would run away as soon as he saw it. | It took months before Nick would spend his time in the same room with me. And months longer before he would let me scratch his belly. I don't know when but after sometime he wouldn't leave my side, and I felt the same way.

Nick LOVED squirrels. They were his mortal nemesis. Their chiding and pure lack of respect for ordered food arrangement drove Nick crazy. I called Nick the squirrelminator. Nick loved Alexandria for the big windows allowing a full view of squirrel enemy territory, and the occasional invasion of small children on scooters, which Nick knew to notify of the squirrels presence by barking loudly at them, warning passer's by of the danger of the furry devils.

Nick was always loving to go on walks, and hated the water. He had bad hips and even though people told him labs were supposed to swim, he told them they could do other things too, like hide under desks during rain storms, or drink water in an even number of times EVERYTIME he would drink, or have spotted tongues or pick themselves up with just their front legs and big chest.

Nick could catch cookies on the top of his snout. I taught him that, all by myself.

Nick had a lot of talents, but the biggest one was putting such a big space in my heart. His undying loyalty, appreciation and calmness were daily comforts. He was vulnerable at times and let you know. He didn't like to be left and wanted to be with you always. He was good at being on his own, just in eye sight of where you were.

Nick thought he was a puppy in the snow. And he let you know. He didn't like you to clean his feet cause it made him feel old again. So he would run away from baths and towels cause it would disappear the puppy in him.

I will always remember so much of Nick. We spent so many days together, good and bad and ugly and just down right lazy ones. He ALWAYS wanted to go on coffee runs, and LOVED when I started to let him have snacks.

His old gentle soul created a space that I never knew I could feel. He felt protective of me, he took as much care of me as I did of him. He whined, growled, barked, farted, hid, ran, jumped, hobbled, chased, panted, drooled, lapped, sneezed, YAWNED, and stared everyday. | The most amazing things about Nick was that you never got tired of it. No matter what, everyday was new, just a little different and provided a small sliver into his soul. He spoke with his eyes and felt with his big spotted nose.

I love you Nick, always and forever. You will always be a part of me, and every moment with me. Thank you for loving me so much, and allowing those that I love to love you too, and loving them back. You are a best pal and a good boy. Your best bud. Bennett
