S: The KirSchwenks: Our First Year (7/4/2010-2011)

Our First Trip: The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs | Some of my favorite memories: Mailing you cards every day before the trip; Playing golf for the first time; Walking the property & relaxing by the pool; Missing the rainstorm in the spa; Wearing my new outfits & You being late for our big dinner!

GOLF CARTS... weren't our only mode of transportation! We walked around the entire city of Chicago in August when we went to the Party at Ken & Katherine's farm. When we went to San Diego in September, I surprised you with a tour of the city on Segues! (This shot was taken at Balboa Park!) We also had a great time playing golf & seeing the sights at Coronado, walking & eating at the Marina/Wharf area, and staying in the GasLamp District. Remember the strange man who tried to pick me up at Jim Croce's restaurant? What are your favorite memories?

But let's face it... Golf is a Big Part of our Lives! | Our first group golf date was with the Moodys in October and you were the putter boy! We also golfed with the Moodys & the Colvens at Pine Dunes. And who could forget...

the first time we played on opposite teams! Your dad was so excited to match up with you against Horacio & me playing on his home course at our first Thanksgiving! But he forgot that women get to play from the red tees and when the game is "best ball" that can be a real advantage! Horacio & I best you & your dad on the very last hole! Ready for a Rematch?

I know that this was the first of many great Thanksgivings to come! I had previously met your parents when we went to the UT Football game. (That was the trip that I figured out that your parents lived right next door to my good friends, Horace & Gloria! Do you remember how Carol & I stalked your ex-girlfriend at the game? I had so much fun, but don't even remember who won the game!) At Thanksgiving, I also got to meet your Aunt Cathy and your cousin Courtney and her finance David. Your Aunt Cathy said that I looked like your mom. What a compliment!

And of course... there's MY family! Being one of only two children, I worried how you might adjust to such a big, loving, chaotic & opinionated group! But you handled it beautifully, memorizing all the names, getting in the floor to play solitaire with the kids and playing golf with the Davis boys. You even rescued a stray dog from my porch, winning the hearts of the children & prompting Coeli to say ,"Ron is my new favorite uncle."

I loved our first Christmas! We had so many fun get-togethers with friends and celebrated with our families in both Dallas & Hooks! First, we celebrated Christmas early with your family in Dallas. We had a pre-dinner with your parents at Fearings & exhausted your dad looking at Christmas lights in HP! The Schwenk Christmas dinner was at Hibiscus, followed by gift sharing at my place and then went to the Melrose for a nightcap and to hear Aubree-Anna sing in the Library! We spent Christmas day with my family and you sang carols & went to Midnight Mass & fought for a place in the food line! You were a natural!

Family is so important, and so are our friends!! What great memories we've made this year with the Greens and all our new friends! We've had dinner at Nick & Sam's with all your golf buddies, dinner at Perry's with the Withrows & Jeff and Belinda, and dinner at Hibiscus, Neighborhood Services & all over town with the Greens! And then there was the night at Perry's when Jana knocked Ms. Allred off her chair, and the one that Carol spilled the beans about seeing Raleigh's tax return on the third date, and the night that Raleigh got in trouble for hitting on the vitamin girl! Our friends are crazy!

And lest it look like we spent our entire first year eating and golfing, I should also note that we've enjoyed our musical venues too! We had a great time at the Lyle Lovett concert at the Bass in Ft. Worth and you surprised me with tickets to the Pops Series at the DSO! We've also enjoyed Live Music with the Hendrix at Love & War, and you spent hours downloading lots of music on to our new Apple products! We've found that we enjoy the same musical tastes, although I've had to introduce you to Van Morrison and you've had to force me to listen to Katie Perry (again & again!!) Some of our favorites include Lady Antebellum, Train, & Rob Thomas. But our all time favorite is...John Mayer!!! Oh yeah.

And Suddenly it was 2011! Happy New Year! | We rang in the New Year with our friends the Greens. How should we remember it? Maybe as a learning experience!

And then it was time to celebrate your 50 PLUS ONE birthday! | We had a nice little party at Mattito's & I met lots of your friends.

But the Party Didn't Stop There...The Biltmore in Phoenix set a high bar for future birthday celebrations! | Of course, we golfed! But we also played life-size chess and ate great food. This place was Frank Lloyd Wright all over!

And the Party Never Ends... We celebrated Valentine's Day dinner at the French Room with the Harrises & Albins, and then moved on to the next celebration of lovers... Merl & Laruie's 55th Wedding Anniversary | We had a wonderful dinner with family in downtown Austin. Kathy was sick and couldn't make it. We missed her as we looked at old pictures of your parents, over-ate & then laughed it off at Ester's Follies!

And who could forget the trip to Orlando? We took your parents and golfed at the Waldorf Asteria where we watched out for Gators. We went out for Italian & danced after diner. We hung out at the pool and partied on LPL's dime. We became Think 1 and Thing 2 at Disney World to protect us from the cold. But our favorite memory will have to be riding the roller coaster at the Harry Potter exhibit. We thought we were so cute until we almost threw up! "Do you think this ride has an age limit?" you asked. "A MAXIMUM age?" I replied. "Yes," you retorted, "and whatever it is, we're beyond it."

And then it was Spring...our Fourth Season!! Easter found us back in Hooks visiting my family and then on to Marble Falls to visit yours. You & your dad golfed while your mom & I talked, shopped, and went to the movies. We had dinner with the Pogues, and even played a competitive game of putt putt. Your dad may still be mad about losing!! We went to a lovely church service & had dinner with the family at the Yacht Club.

In May, you were introduced to my birthday tradition of celebrating for the entire month! You were a good sport and allowed me to do my favorite things without complaining once! I loved our dinner at Hibiscus and my Pandora'sBox. I hope you liked my new shoes that I got in Miami for the occasion!

I missed your mom's birthday party because I was in San Francisco, but thankfully I got to celebrate your dad's in June, along with a little Happy Father's Day. We listened to a little jazz, viewed an exhibit, and then dined at the Pyramid Room. As we plan the start of our second year with a 4th of July trip to Aspen, I can't help but think how fast the last year has gone and how it feels so good to be here. You make me laugh, you make me feel loved, you make me so very, very happy. I'll leave you with a couple more memories that are too important to omit: *Meeting you on 4th of July after heeding Raleigh's advice to "Dumb it down and..." You accused me of driving a soccer mom's car so I had to eventually get a new convertible! *Our first date to Bolsa when you asked if I was wearing my grandma's shawl. *Our next date to the MAT. Smooth move. *August 20th, when we returned from our first trip to HSB and my place was a mess. I started to clean up and turned around to see you down on your hands & knees cleaning the kitchen floor. I knew I loved you then. *We got stuck in the thunder storm returning from PMR. I was supposed to be in Frisco to see young Colton sing the national anthem at the baseball game. There was no way we were gong to make it in time. You drove like lightening to get me there. Thank you baby. I love you, but you need to slow Blackie down :)

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1st Corinthians 13
