FC: James & Kristen February 19th, 2011 "The Engagement"

"I always thought I would be able to know the day that James would propose to me. I never thought the he would be able to keep something so BIG a secret. I had told him numerous times that he would never be able to surprise me but I was so wrong..." - Kristen "QUOTE FROM JAMES" The following pages re-tell the amazing day that we will never forget and that we will forever treasure.

Chapter 1 - Getting To The Beach

Earlier in the day we decided that after work we would head out to Grand Haven to test out our new camera. We had also made plans to hang out with James' family at Craig's Crusiers for his brothers birthday so we packed our winter coats, mittens, hats, etc. before meeting up his family to avoid having to come back to the house. After our fare share of arcade games and go-carts we said our goodbyes and were on our way to the beach. It was such a cold day that I asked James if we should just go another day but he insisted that we go today. We chatted as we normally did on long car rides and happened to pass by a billboard with an engagement ring on it. This topic was nothing new so I asked James if we could go look at some tomorrow. He jokingly said that If I behaved on our outing today that we could go and look at some tomorrow! Once we made it into the city of Grand Haven we suprisingly had a hard time finding a parking spot. We finallly found a small spot that was next to the largest snowbank of all time. I was barely able to get my car door open! We bundled up with all of our winter gear and began our hike up the snowbank...

Chapter 2 - The Photo Shoot | After our hike over the snowbank we couldn't stop laughing because James kept falling up to his knees in the snow which made it almost impossible for him to walk. It made us laugh even harder because I didn't have a bit of trouble and could easliy walk right on the crunchy top layer of snow. So with soaking wet pants legs James starts his photoshoot. I asked James to take a picture of our names that I wrote in the sand ----------------------------->

Chapter 3 - The Walk to the End | The sun began to set and James suggested that we head out to the pier. I was perfectly fine with staying on shore since the pier was covered in layers of snow and ice. James ended up talking me into walking out a little ways but once we got about half way down the pier I refused to go any further. I was starting to get really cold, the wind was picking up, and I was getting cranky.... A couple was walking back from the end of the pier and James asked them how the sunset was. They said it was beautiful and said we should go all the way to the end of the pier to see it. I rolled my eyes as James put up the hood on his jacket and took off at a steady pace toward the end of the pier. I tried calling him back but he kept going. I even yelled, "I know you can hear me!!!" but he kept going. I gave in. I put my head down and followed him the end. I'm so glad that I made it to the end because the sunset was amazing!

Chapter 4 - The Sunset | Once we made it to the end of the pier we were both silent. The beauty of that sunset was breathtaking. We held hands the best we could with our mittens on and just watched in amazment... People were starting to leave the end of the pier so we had an oriental man about our age take our picture together. We started to walk back and James suggested that we sit on the back side of the light house for a minute to rest. There was a little section of cement that was cleared off so I sat down next to James with the lighthouse blocking the wind. James started talking about how the last three years have been the best of his life because of me and that he loved me. I said I loved him too and that the years have flown by. I diidn't know that he was trying to propose so I started talking about the houses on the beach and asked if I thought they had to use hurricane proof glass since Lake Michigan could produce some large storms. He sighed and said he didn't know. James then noticed that the last person had left the end of the pier...

Chapter 5 - The Proposal | James stood right up and grabbed my hand and said, "hurry, we are the only ones left on the end of the pier". We stood there together and looked out as the last bit of sun was fading over the horizon. James started saying the same thing he was saying on the backside of the lighthouse about how the past three years have been the best in his life. I turned back to James to ask why he was saying that stuff again... that's when I saw him franticaly digging around in his coat pocket. I asked, "what are you doing?".He didn't answer but smiled and then it hit me. He pulled out a shiny brown wooden box, go down on one knee, and asked, "Will you Marry Me?" I immedialty said, "are you serious? "YES!" I then looked at the ring in his hands and saw the ring I had been dreaming about. A perfect round cut solitare on a petite silver band. I ripped off my mitten as James placed the ring on my finger. The tips of my fingers were frozen and bright red but I didn't want to put my glove back on. We hugged and jumped up and down until a guy came walking up the pier behind us who was taking pictures. I quickly said that he just proposed and asked if he could take our picture! He agreed :)

Chapter 6 - Back to the Beginning | When we made it back to the car my face hurt from smiling so much! I couldn't stop looking at the ring on my finger that felt so foreign and heavy. We decided that we should eat dinner at the Kirby Grille to celebrate. We called our parents and friends to tell them our wonderful news as we munched on lettuce wraps and fish tacos :) While eating James explained how the day happened from his perspective:
