S: Desmond's First Year
FC: Desmond's First Year
I grew you in my belly for ten and a half months!
We planned a home birth, but you knew you should be at the hospital! After an ultrasound showing your amniotic fluid level was low, we checked into the University of Washington Medical Center around 5pm November 12th. Andre drew chalk flowers to send us off. | Technically, I was in labor for around 48 hours. Active labor for about 5.5 hours.
Due to your heart rate decelorating, you came by Cesarian. The doctors and nurses said it was a true miracle because you had a true knot. You were healthy and beautiful! | Desmond Xavier Nartker Drake Born at 8:27pm Friday November 13, 2011 8 lbs 11 ounces 21 inches
We were so happy to finally meet you. We snuggled and nursed in the hospital. Andre, Blake, Aunt Megan and Grandma Sue came to visit you. We were allowed to leave 1 day early to take you home. | One night you cried and cried. The nurse came and asked, "Did you burp him?" We were embarrassed to say we hadn't even thought of it, so we just quietly mumbled, 'no'. She whacked you on the back, and out came a cute little big Buuurrrrppp!
You came home Sunday November 15 to our 600 sq. ft. Wallingford apartment. Your little hands were so dry next to Andre's because you were 2 weeks late. | We couldn't believe you moved in?!
We were exhausted. The lack of sleep caught up to us and knocked us over. Luckily we had rented another apartment in our building especially for family to stay during your birth and newborn days. It was the best move we ever made. While we slept for a couple hours here and there, family held you and cared for you while you slept. You never slept alone. We had a little spot for you in our bed, but we were scared to close our eyes.
You hadn't gained enough weight so we had to take you into the pediatrician to be weighed. She listened to your heart rate and it was low. We had to check into Children's Hospital. We were so scared, but in the end after lots of tests nothing was wrong- you were perfect!
Grandma Sue came and stayed with us in the hospital all three nights. Grandpa Jim came, Grammy Ro, and Uncle Bob. We were so happy to take you home again. So many family members were there. They took such good care of you (and us!).
We marveled at you every single second. You were definitely the cutest baby we ever saw. You were a winter baby so we had to bundle you up when we went out.
Then I got pretty sick. More family came to take care of you!
Grandma Sue came and held you every night all through the night. | Daddy was in school the whole time. It was hard to study with such a kissable guy around.
Your first Christmas was a small affair. Grandma Sue and Aunt Kate came out.
Do you know how many hours, I stared at you from this vantage point? It was the best view! Watching you dream was wonderful- you would smile and even laugh.
We snuggled you like crazy during the New Year. You sure were a happy baby!
Look how small you were next to Dad's hand!
We filled our days with outings with friends, sleeping, and rolling around playiing on the bed or floor!
You and I flew back to Ohio for a visit when you were 4 months old. The Jeffersons met us at Grandma and Grandpa Nartker's. There was lots of snow!
Spring started in February with the cherry blossoms and nice hikes in Discovery Park.
Kate and Zarin came for a fun visit and we took you to fancy restaurants.
You can sit up now!! And you were teething. First took at 3 months old. We did not sleep much!
We made little stations for you around the apartment. There was your 'office', your eating station, and your jumping station.
Sean and Ashley came and we visited the beautiful tulips in the Skagit Valley.
On that same trip we went to Whidbey Island- your first long day trip.
You love your baths! One hard thing during that first year was all the colds (8) and teething (8)!
We loved taking you to Gasworks Park.
On the 4th of July we had your friends over: Riley, Ellie, and Josephine. | You played with your friend Yago, born just days before you.
Another trip to San Francisio! We visited Golden Gate Park, Great Uncle George, Great Aunt Sara and Kate and Zarin.
You had fun at Baby Gym in Berkley.
You loved parks! And we loved sleeping!
We got a nice hiking back pack for you, but you continued to just want to snuggle with me in the Ergo instead.
You can sit up! While Dad finished up school and I went back to work, another batch of family came to help take care of you: Aunt Sara, Grandma Sue, Aunt Kate and her friend Stephanie. You were not happy with me returning to work! And I hated leaving you!
We had fun with our family! Grandma Sue started you on walking with your hands held and playing with water. Uh oh!
We took you swimming when you were 2 months old. You always loved water!
We loved taking you to all of Seattle's wonderful farmers markets. You enjoyed your new stand up toy now that you could hold yourself up. Jamming out on your piano.
Ah! Finally summer! Sun hats, sun shirts, bathing suits and walks in the woods.
We just couldn't get enough of California!
And now you were eating a lot of good food. You loved raspberries! You started to do "sooooo big' with your hands thrown in the air!
Your dad and you did swim lessons in the summer and we hung out at the wading pools and parks. It was a relaxing summer (except the part where we had to constantly hold your hands to walk you around!) You never stopped moving- ever!
We went back to Ohio to visit family. And you took your first real steps at Great Aunt Maggi's house!
You had fun with your cousins in Napoleon.
We got back to Seattle and you were walking!!
You were growing more and more each day! We ate, played with friends and played in a parenting class.
You can do a lot more now! We visited the Experience Music Project to play instruments and played lots of games.
 You loved smelling spices!!
My favorite season came! You liked picking leaves off trees.
We visited a pumpkin patch farm and you pet a bunny there. You were a dragon for Halloween.
I can't believe you turned one year old! What an amazing year! You are such a big boy now. We celebrated in Meridian Park with all your friends. We even had a Skype video birthday with Aunt Kate when Grandma Sue came out! Happy Birthday my beautiful baby boy!
